After watching the movie, I feel that the story itself is not more depressing than the soundtrack and tone. The boy's mother's final complete acceptance and the father's efforts to accept it, and the mutual sympathy of the gay community in that correctional facility, felt a little warm.
I was more moved by the scene where the male protagonist went home with the boy he met at the art exhibition. They lay together and held hands. The feeling of giving each other a little comfort and warmth in the same-sex world is not carnal desire, but mutual warmth. Really moved, the boy said, stay with me, even if you don't do anything.
That's what the film is trying to convey - understanding and support, including understanding of someone who doesn't understand the same-sex world (pastor father).
Friends said that it is already 2019, and so many people are still in the closet. Not to mention 2019, even though some countries have legally recognized the legality of same-sex marriage, there is still a lot of discrimination in the real world. Because I believe that most people still don't know, or still feel that this is a disease and unhealthy.
You think, people like us are familiar with movies of this type. I believe there are a few people in the literary and art circles who don't know it. However, on the bright side, such film themes are absolutely not allowed to appear in the mainland. I think it is because we belong to a minority, and the state wants to control the thoughts of the vast majority of people. The maintenance of traditional values is the maintenance of the social status quo under the rule of the state. They are afraid of some fundamental changes, such as the stability of family structure, population reproduction. Instead of encountering a problem and solving it, they simply ignore and refuse to acknowledge the existence of the problem, and there is no way to resolve this conflict of reality.
I just feel that no country or an individual should look at the world blindfolded. It is to have more tolerance, or the ability to listen, and then you can figure out what problem you are facing, and then solve it.
In fact, I don't want others to fully identify with other sexuality than men and women, but I don't want everyone to look at things or phenomena that they have never encountered with an inherently narrow perspective without knowing it. We need patience too much, we need patience to understand people, we need patience to listen, and we need patience to solve problems. What I want is for people to have this awareness and not just for homosexuality.
Friends say that your wish is too difficult to achieve, every era has its narrowness. But this is for specific problems. The new era may touch a field that the old era never knew, but this awareness of tolerance, understanding, listening, and problem solving can be cultivated and inherited, and we will face it later. New fields and new problems may not produce the same twists and turns.
