The captain's conceit puts all the crew in the most dangerous place, and then as the food supplies become scarce every year and the ice becomes thicker and thicker, each crew member's different humanity and attitude towards crisis management are revealed. Some lost hope and ended their lives, some went mad, some remained kind, and some remained hopeful.
