Room, as a discrimination against space

well is not a nonsense piece of film review at all~

Tarkovsky's film "Stalker" tells the story of three people who go on a long stalk to find a room where their wishes are fulfilled. Leaving aside Tal's global thinking on human nature, belief, etc., we see in this film a thinking about room and place outside the perspective of architecture. First of all, the fictional "area" in the film can be simply understood as an extension of the place in architecture. The places in the movie are spiritual and shamanistic. There are many mechanisms along the way. On the way to the room, they constantly lure and kill the lost, but the safe way to pass is to respect the place and throw stones to ask for directions. Three people, a writer, a scientist, and a stalker, after many obstacles, finally reached the room, but hesitated whether to enter the room. It is also at this time that the small human deficit between "wish" and "desire" is awake.

Access to the room is a problem. Scientists want to blow up rooms to eliminate political intrigue and war, and finally give up. The room can't do anything mundane, it's nothing more than the politician's own selfish desires; the writer wants inspiration to get through the bottleneck period, but finds that it's just a personal imagination and can't escape the great truth of creation; the stalker listens before People's warnings lead the way for others, but he doesn't set foot, just because a former stalker entered the room and returned with a lot of money but committed suicide in despair.

Which is right or wrong, it is up to the viewer to discern. Looking at it from an architectural point of view, I see that the room in this film is free from the system of architecture and becomes independent. To be something that juxtaposes with place, that is, the area in the film. The long sneak in the area symbolizes people's exploration of their inner world, and the direction is not clear. People go through painful and long groping, but this process still belongs to the outside world. People will subconsciously hide their inner thoughts or not admit their thoughts. Then conceal and decorate. But what is certain is that this process is constantly triggering the heart, the process is painful, but since it has not yet reached the heart, it is forbearance and incomplete at this time. The room is the end of the journey and the climax of discovering one's heart. The room means the heart, where the good, the belief, the moral and the bad, the reality, the desire will eventually prevail over the other.

There is reason to believe that real-world rooms and places face the same situation. People come into a room and either face their heart or become numb and accept its limitations and forget its limitations for a long time. The difference between room and space in my impression is that space makes people aware of their own existence, while room makes people aware of its existence. Literally, this sentence already hints at the oppressive nature of the room. But it should be realized that space is just an enlargement of a room, and the whole world is just a series of spaces, that is, a series of smaller rooms. A smaller area will make us more aware of the system of oppression. We go from a large area into a small area, and then from a small area to a large area, and so on. Or, the stricter system will make us face the contradiction more directly. It seems that there are two attitudes towards things, one is fierce resistance, and the other is indifferent neglect (an example is a small workshop separated by plates in the stairwell of Building B of the Metallurgical Building). This is the moment of awareness.

By extension, another difference between a room and a space is that a room has clear boundaries. This boundary can sometimes even be an imaginary line. This boundary can be very weak, but once you enter this boundary, you enter the realm of the room. Human behavior and the existence of things are all attached. The overall concept of the room is above everything else. The awareness of the individual's personality is lowered, and the hidden emotions and subconsciousness in the heart begin to be exposed because of the powerful shelter of the room. People walk into the room and become part of it. Turned into a system, a system attached to the people under the room system.

In the collective, faced with a room, we must muster the courage to push the door and we see our own kind succumb (almost humbly) to the room and become one of it. The tragedy of modern man seems to be worse than that of classical times. Individuals are forced to enter the collective because they advertise themselves.

It's pretty much a modern take on Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a hill. But based on what has been said above, we should also believe that at the moment when the door is opened, people's hearts will be peaceful and happy.

Stalker quotes

  • Stalker: There's no going back. Nobody goes back the same way they came.

  • Writer: Forget your rucksack. What's in it? Diamonds? You'll lose your way. The Room will give you all you desire. It will snow you under with rucksacks.
