Surprising directorial debut

Although it is still a small and fresh theme and pattern of American independence, the director's portrayal of the little people at the bottom is quite in place. The heroine's self-confidence and pride in pursuing her dreams, as well as her anger and loss in the face of the shattered ideals, are quite touching. This is not a romantic musical like "La La Land". The director chose rap music as the core. No doubt the expressiveness and musical appeal of the play are quite strong. This is similar to Eminem's autobiographical film "Eight Mile". Many are similar. However, the history of inspirational struggles of the bottom-level characters is not much written, but it is the eccentric members of the band who bring life-like touch and humor to the plot, especially the role of grandma. This way of handling makes the overall atmosphere not as heavy and depressing as similar themes. In addition to the main line of music, the sub-line of the relationship between the heroine and her mother is also remarkable. The two do not understand each other, and the relationship of exclusion and confrontation is finally relieved, which is still due to the understanding of rap music in the script. By expressing the fusion of different styles of music on stage, it reveals the two generations' different performances but their unanimous sense of identity to the ideal. As a director's debut, it is really a kind of unexpected surprise.
