I probably only watched it after I finished brushing Xifa's works.

The film is too old, and the appeal of silent films is still limited. The quality of the restored version is much better, but it still affects viewing.

There is an inexplicable vocal soundtrack in it, I thought it was a bug, because it seems to have two soundtracks superimposed, but it seems that many people have seen this version.

A couple of good shots: the one walking down the stairs, the cross on the face, the expressionistic shadow of the slanted window in the old woman's room.

I have watched a lot of old movies recently, all to understand the history of the movie, and the movie viewing experience is not good. Especially the picture quality. Let's look back to the 1940s.

There is no horror except for seeing a face-covered person being frightened in the opening shot of the woman and the heroine's work.

The staircase scene has appeared many times in Hitchcock's movies, but the staircase here does not have the expected thrilling feeling.

In suspense words, I was convinced that the male protagonist was not the murderer at the beginning, because I believed that there was such a routine. After the scene of playing chess to add fire, I completely understood the director's routine to mislead the audience a lot. The male protagonist was once shaken when he was arrested, but quickly reversed. In short most of the time the script is not very catchy.

But I think the biggest reason is the inability to appreciate silent films.

[The second Hitchcock work I saw, became famous in 1927 as "The Tenant". Silent films have stricter requirements for setting off the suspenseful atmosphere, and the fat old man did a great job. But relying on the subtitle board to show what the characters say is ultimately the limitation of technology on the film. Just imagine how vivid the characters in the film would be if this were a sound film. In addition, I watched the D9 version, the background music should have been added by the DVD distributor, which added a lot of color to the film]

The shadow of expressionism is obvious, so in terms of techniques and actors, it is the most demonic part of Xi. Hitchcockian suspense has become a personal hallmark. The hand sliding down the stairs, the cross-shaped window frame projection on the tenant's face, the tenant's restless pacing and the handcuffs caught by the iron railings are fantastic shots, but it's a pity that the final cut wasn't Hitchcock. PS: Ivor's dark circles are so beautifully drawn! Worthy of being the No. 1 demon boy in the UK~~~
