Watching the Movie: The Strange Balance of Stupidity and Conscience

I chose to watch this film entirely because it is classified as one of Isabelle Huppert's "Affair Trilogy"; "Trilogy" just has a magic that makes people want to watch him for no reason, although In fact, I don't really understand what kind of connection there is between these trilogy, and the only one I really like and enjoy is the classic "Piano Teacher".

"Ritual" is not the same as Yu Bei, who I am familiar with. In this film, she feels closer It becomes more treacherous and makes the plot direction difficult to guess.
The whole movie makes me feel very similar to the movie "The Foolishness" that I just watched recently. The plot of this film is also very long, and it broke out at the last moment, but the purpose of the two plots is different, and I personally think that The layout of "Ritual" is superior in comparison; the purpose of "Luo Xing Lu" is not to address the issue of cause and effect, but to record the folly of people, so that the viewer can perceive the folly of the characters (and themselves or all human beings) , and the purpose of "Ritual" is to lay out the problem of cause and effect. It reasonably explains the cause and effect, and on the whole it will feel relatively smooth.
Furthermore, after reading "Ritual", I realized that "human stupidity" is really a terrible thing, but in "The Book of Fools" I only saw superficial problems, while "Ritual" Lead me to think about "the root of stupidity" - "conscience".

I think this film can be based on a simple sentence from the film as the main theme:
"There are aspects of good people I find loathsome, but it is not their evil that is objectionable." - Nietzsche
(There are aspects of good people I find loathsome) , least of all the evil within them.)

In the first half of the movie, the characters of the two heroines are first established. The somewhat rude and wild post office worker Jeanne and the cold, expressionless maid Sophie appear in the same town and seem to be two harmless marginal people. However, as the story progresses, it will be discovered that both of them are actually hiding something. From the middle part, the creepy atmosphere gradually floated out, and the moral consciousness of the two of them was also revealed from the habits of daily life. I liked the arrangement at the end of the film, and ending the film with abnormal grace is even more creepy.

This film is full of details, at least I like the part about Sophie; and Jeanne played by Yubei has changed from wild to shrewd, whether it is the performance of her eyes or her body, it makes me more into the plot of the film, and the big explosion at the end of the film Part of it made me use the "sewing technique". In addition to the overall successful atmosphere management, the performance of the two actresses is definitely the focus of this film.
In order not to affect your enjoyment of watching the movie, I will not pay more attention to the plot.

Back to the front, I mentioned that "Ritual" and "The Book of Foolishness" gave me a very similar feeling because they both talked about class, jealousy, and lack of conscience and stupidity made such emotions out of control .
This film spends a lot of space to make people feel that the employer looks down on Sophie, who is a maid, and Jeanne, a post office employee, so when Jeanne fanned the flames to provoke the relationship between Sophie and her employer, Sophie wanted to hide her secrets more and more.
Class can be overwhelming, and it may make people in the upper positions feel happy, but it is not real respect, but it may ignite the unhappiness in the hearts of those in the lower positions.
And when a person has no conscience, it is very easy to do anything. "A person who has nothing is the most terrible" because he does not have to care about any consequences.

Whether it's Sophie, Jeanne in Ritual or the siblings in Fools, they are all extreme personalities. They may have done cruel things, but it's not what they did that really bothered me. but what made them do this.
What would be more offensive to you than a person's evil?

Finally, I would like to mention my favorite part of the film. Sophie stood calmly on the side of the road after the end of the film, with Mozart's beautiful tunes. This huge contrast scares me even more than the big explosion at the end of the film. .
"Well done."
When people without a conscience are everywhere, I start to wonder if the moral conscience we are accustomed to can overcome such existence; and does human stupidity exacerbate the speed of people's loss of conscience?

La Cérémonie quotes

  • Georges Lelievre: [referring, respectively, to Sophie the illiterate maid and Jeanne the nosy postal clerk] What a pair: one can't read at all, and the other reads our mail.

  • Man at Melinda's birthday party: Speaking of quotes, I have one that's less famous, but quite troubling. "There are aspects of good people I find loathsome, least of all the evil within them."
