An utterly brilliant political thriller

I don't know why “The Post” suffers one-star attacks on IMDB, but I guess that a large percentage of the haters may be New York Times readers. They might think that New York Times is the first to publish those classified files , yet the film instead focuses on Washington Post and does not give enough credit to NYT. The title should be “The Times” rather than “The Post” in their eyes.

Actually, the film is very similar to last year's “Hidden Figures”, in the sense that both use a comedy approach to depict quite dark and depressing periods in American history. That's good news for the audiences, making their viewing experience fairly enjoyable. Not Coincidentally, both films are distributed by 20th Century Fox and I'm pretty sure that “The Post” is going to achieve respectable box office in the United States, say at least 120M dollars.

From the perspective of filmmaking, the film is absolutely brilliant. The original score is especially notable. I don't know who composes the music, but it's just world-class. The direction and acting are also remarkable. The taut pace keeps the attention of the viewers to the last minute of the film, and the veteran cast simply deliver an impeccable performance. The makeup, production design and cinematography are utterly fantastic, and make every scene look real.

The film also conveys an important message: free press is the foundation to democracy and should serve the governance, not the governors, which still resonates today.

Today, when traditional media is dying, and in a country where news only serves the rulers, when I realize the glory and dignity that news once had, I burst into tears several times. The world really has no shortage of directors who shoot "Ready Player One". I hope Spielberg can make more old-fashioned and neat dramas like Eastwood.

The Post quotes

  • Roger Clark: If you got the study from the same source, that would amount to collusion.

Ben Bagdikian: Yeah, we could all be executed at dawn.

Roger Clark: And we could be held in contempt of court - which means Mr. Bradlee and Mrs. Graham could go to jail. Mr. Bagdikian, how likely is it that your source and the Times source are the same person?

  • Kay Graham: When Phil died it was just - I was 45 years old and I had never held - I never had to hold a job in my life. But, I just, I loved the paper, you know. I do. I do so love the paper. I don't want it to be my fault. I don't want to be the one - I don't want to let Phil and my father and all of you kids and everybody down.
