My personal opinion after reading it is that the ending of the story is a temporary happy ending.
The jim at the beginning of the story is called No. 1, and the jim in the universe that No. 1 passed through is called No. 2. At the end of the story, No. 1 died in the hotel, and No. 2 came to another universe. In that universe, No. 2 read the novel. This is what the previous No. 1 did when he traveled, and No. 2 did not. I met the heroine directly at the door, so it is implied that this timeline is quite far from the timeline when No. 1 crossed to No. 2 universe.
When No. 2 met the heroine in the tavern, the heroine said that the scientist he knew before looked exactly like No. 2, but that scientist died in an accident. This is because in the universe that No. 2 traveled to, the heroine and the hero have never met. The heroine just read the articles written by the hero, and was inspired by it to start writing novels on the books. The scientist who was killed was the original male protagonist in the universe that No. 2 passed through, and he called him No. 3. Since No. 2 and No. 3 do not coexist in the same universe at this time, No. 2 is temporarily safe. Therefore, it is possible for No. 2 and the heroine to develop into a pair.
But since parallel universes are infinite, number two is only temporarily safe. From the fact that No. 2 saw the third dead self in the universe of No. 1 before, we can know that there are an indefinite number of male protagonists traveling through each universe at the same time, so No. 2 and the female protagonist are just a temporary He. . .
In short, the biggest variable is the machine, which will send the male protagonist to different universes in different time lines, so the development of the story actually has a lot of variables.
