The managers of Alpha City are rational and ruthless. The means of controlling people is to numb them. Like Newspeak in 1984, the words in the dictionary are decreasing every day, and it's no wonder you often find another word you can't see or hear anymore.
The Matrix came out of nowhere, because deceiving is more effective than fooling. People think that they are fighting for their own ideals, but in fact they are all human flesh generators of the system; people think that they have thoughts and perceptions, but in fact all the information they receive is a simulation of the illusory world fed to them by the system.
How to fight for individual freedom in the face of a powerful system? The Matrix movies are more optimistic, the individual becomes the savior, leading the people who still have a sense of freedom to resist. Alpha City is much more pessimistic, and it is fortunate that individuals can make a bloody way to escape alive.
