This is not the world's first hand-painted oil painting film, but it is the world's first hand-painted oil painting feature film.

"Starry Sky" in motion

As early as 1999, the Russian animation master Petrov used hand-painted oil paintings to show Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea".

Petrov spent five years painting this masterpiece on glass. This film is composed of a large number of beautiful oil paintings. In the creation, Petrov animated the surface of the glass plate with oil paint on his fingertips. Using different layers of glass to make productions, when shooting the same shot, he often makes characters on one layer of the screen, while making the background on another layer of the screen, the light passes through the glass layer by layer after the first frame is shot, and then passes through the glass. Adjust the wet paint on the glass to take the next frame. Only such a unique form can hold up this story.

In The Old Man and the Sea, we can glimpse the shadows of many masters and masterpieces in the history of Western painting. The unbridled sea, the ever-changing blue, the sunrise and sunset, obviously draw nourishment from Monet, the founder of Impressionism.

Sunrise Impression

The picture performance of this film has an important influence on Ang Lee's "Fantasy Drifting of Pi". The perspective of looking down in "Youth School" shows the vastness of the sea, the color of the seabed fish at night, the same color of the sky and the sea, etc. You can find shadows in this film.

In fact, the earlier production of films by traditional painting can be traced back to Chinese ink animation.

Ink animation is a perfect combination of traditional Chinese painting and modern animation technology. The first ink animation was "Little Tadpoles Looking for Mother", produced by Shanghai Fine Arts Studio in 1960, directed by Sheng Tewei, Qian Jiajun, Tang Cheng, and screenwriters by Fang Huizhen and Sheng Lude. The sound of frogs comes out of a mountain spring ten miles away". The ink animation has no outlines, and the ink is rendered on the rice paper naturally, and each scene is an excellent ink painting. The artistic conception is virtual and real, light and elegant.

The swan song of ink animation is the love of mountains and rivers.

Landscape

"Landscape Love" was produced by Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio in 1988. Te Wei and Mark Xuan are the directors, and Wang Shuchen is the screenwriter. The story is about an old violinist who fell ill on his way home and rescued a young fisherman in a deserted village.

In terms of shooting techniques, the photographer broke the traditional stop-frame shooting method of previous ink and wash animations, shot at the original background, and then combined with the animation shots of stop-frame shooting, giving full play to the characteristics of Chinese ink wash painting. When dealing with the climax of the film of the separation of master and apprentice, the painter used the technique of painting on the spot and the photographer shooting on the spot, and then combined with the animation lens, so that the film fully displayed the sense of layering and rhythm brought by the artists' brushwork.

However, the above works are all short films. This "Love Van Gogh" is a feature film! Up to 95 minutes.

Look at how much effort the production team spent: 7 years, 125 painters, 65,000 oil paintings. The 95-minute animated feature film was finally presented to us.

In the 1960s, the Shanghai Fine Arts Studio produced wonderful ink animations. In this century, the hand-painted oil painting "Love Van Gogh" won the Best Animation Award at the Shanghai Film Festival. contact.

What if Van Gogh's paintings moved?

I have no idea.

All I know is that this is the movie I'm most looking forward to this year! Tickets have been bought!
