strong self-reflection

This film has a strong sense of self-innuendo from the director, and it should be Polanski's own experience to expose the social status quo of this "others are hell". As a foreigner from Poland, the male protagonist in the film encountered many unexpected indifferences and ridicules in Paris, suffered setbacks in both love and life, and gradually fell into the abyss of persecution and paranoia.

Polanski seems to want to use this film to complain about the unfair treatment he suffered in the film circle after he went into exile in France. Does the male protagonist suffer from delusions himself, or is he a normal person who suffers from delusions only when he is stimulated in this special environment? There is a lack of clarity in the film.

In addition to the first-class suspenseful and thrilling atmosphere, Polanski's performance is also a highlight. The seductive shape of the transvestite is really eye-catching! The most disappointing is Adjani, there are only three scenes in total (the last one is not counted), the promotion of the film is too tricky, and it is estimated that she wants to use her fame to open up the market.

Using the identity of a tenant to interpret the current social people are restrained and influenced by the surrounding environment. When the landlord warns you, the neighbor complains to you, the friend lectures you, the coffee shop owner orders you, you become a person in someone else's life. In this way, the protagonist enters another identity step by step, a person he has never met, but lives in the eyes of others. The real horror is that this metaphor is happening to each of us.

This cold, wet weather is just for watching movies like this at home. There is a Bunuel style, everything tastes right! Naturally, she was overjoyed, but contacting Polanski was a bit heavy afterwards. Excellent soundtrack

The Tenant quotes

  • Trelkovsky: These days, relationships with neighbors can be... quite complicated. You know, little things that get blown up out of all proportion? You know what I mean?

Stella's Friend: No, no I don't. I mind my own business.

  • Trelkovsky: I am not Simone Choule!
