Two points about the history of the film

"British Showdown" - "Hurricane Rescue" + "Bridge of Spies" should be the best action movie I have seen recently ("Taxi Driver" does not count). No comedy, no gags, this movie is very un-Jackie Chan. In contrast, anger, grief, dealing, fraud, and the resulting revenge are the keynotes of the film. I feel more like this is a Japanese revenge movie in the guise of a British movie. No spoilers, just two points of doubts you may have when watching the movie: First, the identity of Brother Long. He himself said that he was born in Guangxi, participated in the Vietnam War, then moved to Singapore, and immigrated to the UK in 1984. Later, we found that Hannes had a large number of encrypted parts in Guan Yuming's files, which obviously would not be the treatment that an ordinary soldier should receive. Considering that he remained in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) after the liberation of Vietnam in 1975, he should have stayed as a non-registered combatant, aka a spy. Combined with his ability to complete the IAF and his Chinese-born identity, I deduce that Guan should be the MACV-SOG special force [the so-called "Research and Observation Group of the US Advisory Command in Vietnam"], which was stationed in Vietnam and specialized in black operations. Foreign combatants, abandoned by the U.S. government after the war, were eventually reduced to civilians and suffered bad luck. Second, the identity of Hennessy. Hennessy is based entirely on Gerry Adams, the current Sinn Fein leader in Northern Ireland. This gentleman was originally a member of the Irish Republican Army fighting for the independence of Northern Ireland, and later turned to promoting the peace process in Northern Ireland. He was arrested by Northern Ireland police on murder charges in 2014. The UDI in the film is the neta against the Irish Republican Army IAF, but the Uster militia UVF is still the original name, which is an armed group with a Protestant background and opposes the IAF with a Catholic background. If you know these two historical evolutions first, you will have a better understanding of the plot of the movie. There is no "Youth" to watch this National Day this year, just go and watch this, you will not regret it. Also, the last sentence is very meaningful. Don't wake the dragon.

The Foreigner quotes

  • Liam Hennessy: You killed my dog.

Quan Ngoc Minh: Dog's fine. Just sleeping.

  • Quan Ngoc Minh: [opens coat] I'm wearing a bomb. Anyone comes in, I touch it one, then we die. Now, give me the names.

Liam Hennessy: They claim to be IRA, but I don't know who they really are. I'm doin' everything I can to find out who's responsible.

Quan Ngoc Minh: [puts gun to Hennessy's head] You're lying! Who killed my daughter?

Liam Hennessy: I'm sorry! I truly don't know yet!

Quan Ngoc Minh: [pause] The explosive the bombers use, it's Semtex-H?

Liam Hennessy: [nervous] Yes. Yes. You know about Semtex?

Quan Ngoc Minh: I know Semtex-H. During the war Czechs make for the army. Good for bombs and traps.

    Liam Hennessy: In Vietnam?

Quan Ngoc Minh: Yes. Many American people died by Semtex-H. Now, IRA use to kill my daughter. That's ironic.

Liam Hennessy: I've read your history. We both know about war. We've both tried to put it behind us. You and me, we're alike.

Quan Ngoc Minh: [backhands Hennessy in the face] We are NOTHING alike. You're NOTHING! You kill women and children! NAMES!

Liam Hennessy: To Almighty God, I don't know!

Quan Ngoc Minh: [cocks the gun]

Liam Hennessy: WAIT! Wait! I've set a trap for them when they use the next bomb. When they claim responsibility for the next bombing, they'll use a code word, telling the police they're IRA. I've changed that code word. So when they use it, I'll know.

Quan Ngoc Minh: [lowers the gun] You have one day.

Liam Hennessy: ...what if they don't set off a bomb by then?

    Quan Ngoc Minh: Twenty-four hours.

    [leaves]

Liam Hennessy: ...Jesus. Oh, Jesus, sweet Jesus.
