too young dolan

For a post-90s director like Dolan who has been immersed in the film and television industry since childhood, the most important thing is taste and aesthetics. Therefore, this "Just the End of the World", as always, inherits Dolan's aesthetic and literary style: backlighting, slow motion, psychedelic and just right soundtrack, temperamental tones, and expressionistic MV-style still life editing. Sad and beautiful.

But unfortunately, the theme of this script is beyond the control of the 27-year-old. "I Killed My Mom" and "Mummy", which were amazing at the time, were both themes that Dolan had a hand in: the mother-child relationship of a single-parent family from the perspective of a teenager. The semi-autobiographical script is full of Dolan himself. This kind of familiarity and personal, coupled with his shooting style, it is no problem to win the award and get soft.

In "Just the End of the World", the protagonist is a 34-year-old man who has been away from home for 12 years and is about to end his life. Although he is still talking about family relationships, the complexity and heaviness of it are incomparable. Just as "Space Traveler" ignores the stories behind those who gave up life on earth and chose to sleep for 120 years to go to the unknown planet, Dolan here also ignores the inner story of the male protagonist who chose to leave home alone. He shouldn't be just a boy who wants to talk, the temper brought by wandering and death, the traces of the decision to leave behind in the desolate heart, should be cruelly and quickly obliterated that boy.

In all fairness, the male protagonist performed well, including the family, trying to use their own way to grasp the complexity, struggle and anxiety in the role. However, due to the lack of depth of dialogue, superficial embarrassment and neurotic quarrels, the depth of these actors is like a tree with no source of water and no roots. halfway. Therefore, the audience has only deep disgust for Anton's unreasonableness, but cannot understand and feel the sadness and pain behind all his actions and actions. Likewise, Katherine, Susan, and Mother struggled to gain empathy from the audience.

The flying bird in the last scene actually tells everything the director wants to express. The bird trying to return home, but ran rampant in the house and bumped into the wall, and finally died alone in the brightest and warmest light.

I would love to see the original script.

It's Only the End of the World quotes

  • Louis-Jean Knipper: There I was, after 10 years, well, 12, to be precise. So after 12 years of absence and in spite of my fear, I was going to visit them. In life there a number of motivations that are no one's business, that force you to leave without looking back. And there are just as many motivations that force you to return. So after all those years, I decided to retrace my steps. Take the journey... to announce my death. Announce it in person, and try to give the others and myself one last time, the illusion that I am, until its very end, the master of my life. Let's see how that goes.

  • La mère: I don't understand you. But I love you. I love you. No one will take that away from me.
