The first film in history that was allowed to enter the Forbidden City in Beijing to be filmed on-site was based on "Dusk in the Forbidden City" written by Puyi's tutor Johnston as the original structure, with reference to Puyi's autobiography "The First Half of My Life" and other related works. A biographical film with a Western perspective, but a serious production. It is co-produced by the Italian Yanco Film Company, the British Dao Film Company and the Chinese Film Co-production Company. Chinese backgrounds, Chinese stories, and Chinese characters are mixed with Western concepts and techniques. The film reflects a magnificent era with the legendary life of a special person. The film's photography and costumes are particularly stylish, and Pu Yi's characterization avoids the stereotype of masking.

The Last Emperor quotes

  • Pu Yi, at 15: Is it true, Mr. Johnston, that many people out there have had their heads cut off?

Reginald Fleming 'R.J.' Johnston: It is true, your majesty. Many heads have been chopped off. It does stop them thinking.

  • Reginald Fleming 'R.J.' Johnston: The Emperor has been a prisoner in his own palace since the day that he was crowned, and has remained a prisoner since he abdicated. But now he's growing up, he may wonder why he's the only person in China who may not walk out of his own front door. I think the Emperor is the loneliest boy on Earth.
