The unbearable in the murmur of poetry

I heard about this Polish movie a long time ago, and I dragged it out until today. It may be the most impressive movie I have seen in the first half of this year or even in the whole year, no one. The film uses slow poetic footage to indirectly tell the painful history of the Jewish people during World War II. The protagonist seems to be ida, but in fact, his aunt Wanda is the witness and bearer of this history. Son and sister were killed by fellow countrymen (fear of being found by the Nazis to take care of hiding Jews), red judges in Stalin’s time (persistent pre-conviction trials against innocent people), atheists who paralyzed themselves with the help of tobacco, alcohol, and debauched private life, the sentence “I "I'll have a drink for your health" is particularly powerful. After finding the remains of a loved one, in the morning after a debauchery, these contradictions and pains finally became an unbearable weight in life, and ended in the symphony of Gzart. A life of pain and loneliness.
Most of the images in the film can be enjoyed as a model of photography, with soft lighting arrangements, special composition, and light and dark contrasts all very elegant. It can be seen that each scene is carefully arranged by the director, the composition of each picture is the result of careful consideration, and the director's aesthetic orientation is implemented from beginning to end.

The film was shot with a 1:1.33 aspect ratio, using an ALEXA 4:3 with an UP lens. The ARRI RAW information was recorded in color at the time of shooting, and later converted to black and white. The large blank composition in the retro upper space has become the biggest feature of the film, and at the same time further emphasizes the loneliness and alienation of IDA and Wanda. The light arrangement in the film and the soft light device used highlight the delicate feelings of the two heroines. Aside from the melancholy and depressing theme, if you are interested in black-and-white photography and retro-style composition, many of the shots are worth watching repeatedly and pondering carefully.
