This is a classic we need to be careful with (2005.07)

Frankly, Ford's most acclaimed western doesn't look like a classic by today's eyes and standards. However, people who watched this movie, or who were willing to watch it, probably knew that it was a work from 1939, and even had a basic concept of Westerns before and after. Yes, if you know more about its background, I believe you will use another set of coordinates to evaluate it, and you will not be disappointed.
The story of this film is not complicated. I believe that many movie fans, like me, can easily guess the development and outcome of its story after watching the previous paragraph (to Wayne's appearance and boarding the carriage). But enough background knowledge and enough care will keep you in awe of it without laughing at its naivety and old-fashioned—in fact, "naive" and "old-fashioned" come after it.
All in all, this is a classic that we need to be careful with.

  • Buck: Well all I gotta say is, that he better stay away from that there Luke Plummer. By gosh, Luke's run all'a Ringo's friends outta Lordsburg. Why the last trip there I seen him hit a rancher on the head with the barrel of his gun and, well he just laid it wide open like a butchered steer.

  • Dr. Josiah Boone: Well, now that the danger is past, Mr...

    Samuel Peacock: ...Peacock.

Dr. Josiah Boone: Ladies and gentlemen, since it's most unlikely we'll ever have the pleasure of meeting again socially, I'd like to propose a toast. Major, Gatewood, Ringo... to your health.
