Fanny and Alexander: A Long Journey

After watching the five-hour TV version, it's the longest one I've ever watched...

First of all, the CC cover is very beautiful, I like it. Personally, this film is not Bergman's best feature film. In terms of plot and depth, I think married life is better. But the film is full of many surreal cinematic techniques, and the use of color throughout the film is also excellent, so Bergman's mastery level is once again demonstrated.

There are also shadows of the Virgin Fountain and the Seventh Seal: Alexander's experience at Uncle Isaac's house and meeting the ghosts of his two fathers at the epilogue.

Above the fragile reality, there are imaginary threads that weave new patterns.

For more than 3 hours, I didn't dare to blink my eyes. Except for the beautiful scenes, every shot was intriguing. The exquisite, gorgeous, warm and delicate masterpieces, even the actors are also masters. It can be said to be a perfect movie with no shortcomings.

The later Bergman is completely different from the early one...the style has changed a lot, but the same thing is that the religious theme remains the same. It is said that this is Bergman's version of A Dream of Red Mansions... Well, there is indeed something to draw from. The huge and complete structure, the multiple characters and the multiple plots that follow form a huge Ukiyo-e with delicate and gorgeous images. This is the curtain call for the director himself.

Fanny and Alexander quotes

  • Ekdahlska huset - Helena Ekdahl: I loved being a mother. I loved having a big belly. I loved being an actress too, but I preferred being a mother.

  • Emilie Ekdahl - Ekdahlska huset: Your sister gave me sleeping pills for my insomnia. I put three of them in the broth. I did not intend for you to drink it. While you were checking on Elsa, I put three more in. Soon you will sleep very soundly, and when you wake up, I will be gone.
