On the Golden Gate Bridge, just high in the sky

"Golden Gate Bridge" documentary footage

In April 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was completed and opened to the public in May of the same year. To this year, 2017, the full 80th anniversary.

10 years ago in 2007, Eric Steel's documentary "The Bridge" was released in one year (2004). It did not discuss bridge aesthetics and steel structure, but recorded the suicide of jumping from the bridge into the Golden Gate Strait in one year. By. A note on the 70th year of the Golden Gate Bridge, the mysterious and romantic place that suicides "aspire to".

It also makes us somewhat aware that in addition to a happy family, happiness and health, there are actually a lot of loneliness, illness, mental torture and darkness in the world. These deep and deep corners of human beings may be associated with suicide, but they become a combination with a fixed place, such as the forest in Hakone. I think it may be difficult to really understand without standing there. The distance from the center of the Golden Gate Bridge to the water surface is about 60 meters, and a person jumped down, almost at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour when hitting the water surface. There is little chance of survival.

If only to achieve the effect of death, perhaps it has more ways.

Golden Gate Strait, January 30, 2015

When I went to San Francisco two years ago, the routine arrangement included a stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. During the dry season, the west coast of the United States is full of sunshine, and the Pacific Ocean brings bursts of dry sea breeze. The tourists standing on the bridge can almost be described as bustling. Here you can overlook the city center and Alcatraz in the distance. I was afraid of the ocean and turbulence. After taking a commemorative photo on the bridge, I looked down at the sea and returned to the stable head of the bridge. On the way to think of it, the tour guide said that a few days ago, a Chinese girl who was studying at Yale came to San Francisco on purpose and jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and disappeared. I think it's good here, but I still don't understand why that Chinese girl traveled such a long way to commit suicide here.

In the next few days, I will pass through or see the Golden Gate Strait many times. One morning, I saw the Golden Gate Bridge in the morning mist on the bus. At that moment, it seemed that I understood it immediately.

There are "unreal romantic commitments" here.

Perhaps standing on the Golden Gate Bridge, as vision experts say, creates the illusion that jumping off will be a clean, peaceful, soft death. If this is the case, they are here to seek the final compensation of the world at the last moment of their lives, and we should not be too harsh.

Farewell is a difficult choice, struggling from pain and frustration, escaping from hopeless illness, and moving towards freedom from bondage. Flying, is it the best posture to break free? Free landing, is it the best way to be free?

Although, "it's not fun at all to hit the water with your body." Although, the Kinmen Strait with deep still water returned to the terrifying tranquility after 1 second.

In the recorded pictures of the bridge jumpers or the descriptions from the relatives of the suicide victims, some of them were determined, some were slightly hesitant, some were undecided, and some were persuaded by the police in the name of their sons. But there were two people, who were going there, or standing there, howling.

Crying, just crying.

Heartbreaking.

Some people will say that such behavior is irresponsible to the family and loved ones, and some people will suggest that the Golden Gate Bridge be installed with a protective net. (There was a motion, but it wasn't implemented because of funding and some controversy.) But they were mostly adults, life-threatening moments, and didn't know what to say to their feeling of dealing with the constant pain and despair they were doing this way. .

I've been thinking a little bit about pain and enduring recently, and I've come to think that what we can't endure is often endure itself.

However, after thinking about it, I thought of a sentence (to the effect) that I forgot to read: The patience we do is no more difficult than the earth is in the spring. If spring is to come, the earth will finish it little by little.

The Bridge quotes

  • Witness: [after witnessing a suicide] When I talked to the highway patrolman, I asked him "Is this a rare occurrence or does this happen a lot?" And he looked and me and he sort of smiled and he said, "It happens all the time."

  • [Last lines]

Caroline Pressley - Gene's Friend, South San Francisco, CA: I don't know why people kill themselves. And yet, it's a small step to empathize... to say... well, because I think we all experience moments of despair. That, ah, it would be so much easier not to do this anymore. But for most of us, the sun comes out, and then "Oh well, Tomorrow is another day". Why he chose the Bridge? I don't know. Maybe there was a certain amount of release from pain, by pain. Maybe he just wanted to fly one time.
