The Undertaker is a very thought-provoking movie, thinking deeply about whether I am suitable for my current job, thinking about how to face death, thinking about why and how to live in this life.

The rhythm of the movie is very slow, and there is no fierce conflict story. It is to fully show the origin, development and return of an mortuary. This is a profession that is very far away from everyone's daily life but will eventually be faced. The mortuary's perspective gives us a discussion about life. You will be afraid of some occupations, but your life is inseparable from their contributions! Very warm movie, the people who have passed away are more peaceful because of them!

Departures quotes

  • Daigo Kobayashi: There are many kinds of coffins.

    Yuriko Kamimura: 50000, 100000, 300000 yen.

Daigo Kobayashi: They differ by that much?

Yuriko Kamimura: The left one is plywood, the next one has metal fittings and carvings on both sides. And the most expensive one is solid cypress wood.

Yuriko Kamimura: Yes, they all burn the same way.

    Daigo Kobayashi: Same ashes.

    Daigo Kobayashi: Kind of ironic.

  • Shokichi Hirata: Salmon?

Daigo Kobayashi: [Watching the river] Ah, yes. They're right by the rocks... over there.

Shokichi Hirata: [to the salmons swimming against the stream] Oh! Go for it!

Daigo Kobayashi: It's kind of sad... to climb only to die. Why work so hard if you're going to die.

Shokichi Hirata: I'm sure they want to go back... to their birthplace.
