where are you going

Why does a man who has been repeatedly fired for drinking and misbehavior think he can still win that world's gamble?

What kind of unrelenting ambition is manipulating him and leading him to where?

The newspaper owner in a small town, a businessman, is not necessarily kind, moral, or how profound his insights are, but just out of his duty, he stood on the opposite side of the protagonist and said a powerful sentence:

Where are you going?

Consumers are here, charities are here, playgrounds are built, Yingge and Yanwu are playing, and capital principles are running unimpeded.

Imprisoned in the well, Leo's life is passing day by day.

"Leo, don't be afraid, we'll get you out soon," the band sang happily.

Is this what you call hope? It's just a lie of a vampire.

The longer he struggled in that subterranean misery, the more prosperous it was on earth.

And he listened to the desperate knocks on the door every day, but he believed the lies of the enemy.

Until he died under the hallucination of heaven, the whole false feast collapsed.

Where is this farce going?

The protagonist has no answer, he has no way back.

Even at the end of his life, he tried to ruin his quest to get back to his New York, back to principles.

Ace in the Hole quotes

  • Charles Tatum: When the history of this sun-baked Siberia is written, these shameful words will live in infamy: No chopped chicken liver! No garlic pickles. No Lindys. No Madison Square Garden... no Yogi Berra! Whattya know about Yogi Berra, Miss Deverich?

Miss Deverich: I beg your pardon?

    Charles Tatum: Yogi Berra!

Miss Deverich: Yogi? Why, it's a sort of religion, isn't it?

Charles Tatum: You bet it is! A belief in the New York Yankees!

  • Herbie Cook: [Looking at the unstable cliff-dwelling] I don't like the looks of it, Chuck.

Charles Tatum: Neither do I, fan, but I like the odds.
