There are two lines in this movie, real life is one line, and memories are one line.
Hansel's life was definitely rough. Born in East Germany after World War II, the tall Berlin Wall cut him off from contact with another culture. However, he was born with a longing for the other side of the culture. The mother drove the father away and rejected the faith in Jesus because Hitler taught them that "absolute power is corruption". Hansel loved the free-spirited rock music on American radio since he was a child. He was kicked out of school for promoting the spirit of rock music at school, and on that day, at the Berlin Wall, he met the man who changed his life - American soldier Luther.
Luther was surprised by the fact that the handsome Hansel was a boy, but it didn't stop him from falling in love with Hansel. And Hansel is also addicted to the colorful gummy bears that Luther brought, which is different from the East German gummy bears that only have one color. That is the temptation of another culture, Hansel's yearning for freedom and dreams.
Falling in love, Hansel decides to flee East Germany for America with Luther. However, Luther is not satisfied with simple cross-dressing, he hopes that Hansel can become a "real woman". So Hansel underwent sex reassignment surgery. Never thought the surgery would fail. So Hansel becomes a creature that is neither male nor female. But he finally put on a hair cap and became a "woman" Hedwig, and followed Luther to the land of Junction City, Kansas, USA, but was abandoned soon after, alone, in a foreign country, and without support. Since then, for his dream, he began to struggle in the United States, trying various ways to dream rock.
Hansel's talent for rock music is truly unparalleled. Each of his songs tells a story, an idea, a dream. In the lyrics you can find his life experiences, and you can also feel his feelings about those experiences. And the music that comes from the heart is often the most touching music. After changing his name to Hedwig, Hansel formed a rock band called "the Angry Inch". The mutilated male symbol, the mother's clay fake breast, and the pain caused by the failure of sex reassignment surgery are permanent. The Angry Ich also became the band's name. The name actually represents the source of his miserable life. Hedwig on the stage sang lively and frenzied rock, but the lyrics in his mouth were his endless loneliness and sadness.
The most important characters in Hansel's life were almost always men. Besides Luther, another person who has left a deep mark on his life is Tommy. When we first met, Tommy was just a teenager with a simple love for rock music. In contrast, Hansel has experienced the vicissitudes of life and has a deep love for rock and roll. Hansel's tough band formed with the wives of South Korean military officers was rough, but Hansel's music moved Tommy, so Hansel became Tommy's musical mentor and emotional partner. Hansel paid a lot to Tommy, Tommy is both his emotional sustenance and his musical partner, both of which are what Hansel desperately needs after the stormy life, his emotional investment can be imagined. Therefore, when betrayed, the inner pain is also huge. In the film, Hedwig's goal is to bring the Angry Inch to Tommy to ask for an explanation, which can be seen.
Later, they meet again, in an alleyway looking for prostitutes. The two who meet again still have a tacit understanding, but their personalities are still very different. In fact, I believe that Tommy also loves Hedwig, but his heart is contradictory. At the end, Tommy was naked against Hansel who was revived as a boy. When Tommy sang wicked little town to Hansel, it gave me a very strong feeling that he was just a boy who didn't know how to love, but he really cared Hansel's, not feeling moved.
There is a tattoo on Hansel's thigh. At the beginning of the film, it is a full moon divided into two parts. , so I won't talk about it here) But by the end of the film, the tattoo appeared on Hansel's thigh after struggling, which probably means that Hansel has given up his obsession with his past life. Let go of the complaints about the rough life and the road to dreams, break free from the shackles in your heart, and decide to face a new life again. In fact, Hasel is just a person who wants to have love and freedom, but he has to pay a huge price for it, including his dignity, his heart, his body symbol... So seeing this, I have an indescribable feeling in my heart , I think it is probably a sigh for Hansel's ups and downs, but relieved for his letting go.
The title of the movie is actually quite interesting. The English name is Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but the film has two Chinese translations, one is "Demon Music and Fury" and the other is "Rock Barbie". In the beginning, it was called "Demon Music and Anger", which is also interesting. From the perspective of identity and appearance, Hedwig is indeed a demon type, with thick makeup, heavy eye shadow, flirtatious red lips, and exaggerated hairstyle. He is definitely a maverick "demon type" character. le) and anger, but from the content of the film, it is more like yue and anger. Hansel's music also has the anger he has been holding because he can't let go of his obsession. But I personally prefer "Rock Barbie", the simplicity is one, and Hansel's shape is actually a Barbie, a person who mechanically and persistently sings rock and expresses himself with rock and roll. His fiery and contradictory heart, deeply hidden under the exquisite Barbie dress, has no way of knowing.
