"We're the worst. We're the best."
In May 1993, 5 Manchester boys rented a van and drove to Glasgow, after being refused to perform, they "performed a few songs for 7 audiences"; 3 years later, in August 1996, the total population of the UK 4% of them are snapping up their concert tickets.
The concert, held in its hometown of Knebworth, was attended by 250,000 people in what has been described as "the most attended music event before the advent of the Internet age."
The movie was on the computer for two months. Never thought of it.
I watched it twice in two days, without subtitles or with subtitles. Both times I wiped my tears and cried. Although I know it is deliberately provocative.
In particular, I can't help the sensationalism of the band's documentary. Produced by last year's hit Amy director and directed by Mat Whitecross, it focuses on an unofficial documentary endorsed by Liam and Noel (Noel is still executive producing), telling the story of the band's miracle period from its inception to '96. The film does not let the interviewees appear in the camera at all, and is made up of materials and voices.
The director wisely stopped the time at 1996, so as to avoid the misunderstandings and ups and downs of the band; also did not mention anything about the battle of the century between Blur and Oasis, or the The Beatles, The Stone Roses and The Smiths, etc. The influence of the predecessors, or the accident of several famous shows in 1996 (such as the exit of MTV unplugged Liam).
However, many of the stories and materials in the film are still quite rare, and even veteran music fans should enjoy it. Like the band's rehearsal video in '91, their first gig in Glasgow in '93 (and their "fateful" encounter with Alan McGee); the older brother saw his younger brother skating on stage during the LA tour, and threw his hands and disappeared that night; the drummer Tony was fired.
