The deep social division of labor has stripped people of their ability to be self-sufficient in heaven and earth, making individuals become vassals of human groups. The community is extremely disgusted, or extremely afraid of dissidents. Whether it is the religious heresy in Zweig's writings, or the alienation in the process described by Kafka, the non-me race challenges the authority of those in power, and the others challenge the tolerance of the group, such examples are not uncommon. Zelig's discoloration is not so much protection and security, but rather a typology of the process of individualization. Is it really because of his discoloration that he made history and won the hearts of the people? The people never read him back because he was always one of "us".

Zelig quotes

  • Leonard Zelig: [in a hypnotic trance] My brother beat me. My sister beat my brother. My father beat my sister and my brother and me. My mother beat my father and my sister and me and my brother. The neighbors beat our family. The people down the block beat the neighbors and our family.

  • Leonard Zelig: I'm 12 years old. I run into a Synagogue. I ask the Rabbi the meaning of life. He tells me the meaning of life... But, he tells it to me in Hebrew. I don't understand Hebrew. Then he wants to charge me six hundred dollars for Hebrew lessons.
