After seeing it for half an hour, I began to think that the shocking, or the touch point that can hit my heart, may be in the back.
Who would have thought, I kept waiting for the back, the back, and when it arrived, it didn't show up.
It's a little less Ang Lee.
The American attitude towards the Iraq war is reflected in the movie. For the heroes who came back from the battlefield, the spectators of the stadium, the workers on the stage, these ordinary people, let alone respect, they don't even have goodwill. The rich bigwigs just want to buy their stories and make movies to earn fame and fortune for themselves, but they can't even give up a good price. Billy's family, although proud of him, did not want him to return to the battlefield. It seems that only the cheerleaders with the heart of an angel really regard Billy and the others as heroes.
But these are just the branches that make up the film. The soul of this movie lies in the character Billy Lynn, who is precisely the protagonist, which makes it difficult to understand. Billy refused the arrangement of his family and insisted on returning to the battlefield. Why did he return to the battlefield that made him feel terrible and painful? He didn't hesitate to leave the girl he fell in love with at first sight? This should be the key to this movie, but it is precisely this, I don't know if I didn't understand it too well, or Ang Lee didn't explain it clearly.
Is it because of heroism? no. Billy doesn't consider himself a hero. Everything he experienced during the intermission also made him see that others did not regard them as heroes, and he had seen that hero worship was nothing but hypocrisy.
Is it because of national interest? no. He was forced to be a soldier. When he arrived in Iraq, he didn't understand why he was involved in such things. His naughty squad leader gave him all the explanations. He didn't seem to understand too much, and neither did I. I understand, so does my partner.
So, just because the reality is cruel and ugly, is it necessary to escape to the battlefield facing the test of life and death? It doesn't seem convincing either!
Anyway, when it came, I couldn't figure out why Billy said that I had to go back.
This is the main reason for the 3.5 score. What is Ang Lee going to say? Anti-war? human nature? None of these themes seem very clear.
On the other hand, another movie about soldiers retiring from the battlefield, the famous "Born on July 4th", Tom's male protagonist, from the beginning to indulge in the glory of the national hero, to loss, to reflection, to becoming an anti-war Warriors, their step-by-step psychological changes are very delicate, clear and layered.
As for the technology, because there is no 120 frames to watch, so I won't say it. A lot of close-ups and front and back shots used to adapt to this new technology didn't make me feel special, but it was fine. But no matter what, I admire Ang Lee's courage to take the lead in the world.
Finally, I have to say that this film is almost entirely based on dialogue to promote the plot, and it may not be a "good-looking" film in the minds of Chinese people.
