First of all, I am not Catholic (not yet).
Earlier I thought that religion exists because of the fear of death and the unknown. But I don't think so now.
I think God exists because absolute truth exists.
I have debated with many people about absolute truth, and many people have told me that there is no absolute truth in this world, only relative truth. I asked them, "There is no absolute truth in this world" is it absolute truth?
So I think that absolute truth is the premise of all rational logic. Because absolute truth exists, logic exists, so human reason exists. But our rational logic can only tell us that absolute truth exists, but it cannot tell us what this absolute truth is. There is a relationship between reason and faith in Catholic doctrine. My personal understanding is that reason tells us that truth exists, and faith tells us that even if we don’t fully know what this truth is, we still believe it exists.
From this point of view, then, the basic point of atheism is the denial of the unknowable absolute truth, which does not exist because it is unknowable. That's all.
Of course, many people know the story of Adam and Eve being punished for eating the fruit of wisdom in the Bible. I will not expand on the in-depth interpretation of this story, but the most important point is that if you want to know absolute good and evil, it is the human attempt to replace act of God.
Absolute good and evil, absolute truth, is knowledge beyond human reason. Catholics say that God is love and truth. But it can only be said here, the rest is the revelation of God. Therefore, religion emphasizes that human beings should "surrender" themselves to God, which is to emphasize that human reason should be a humble attitude in the face of God's revelation.
Of course, you can totally disagree with me and think that the starting point of "absolute truth" is itself illusory.
As for the meaning of religion, is it the source of morality? The sustenance of life? Meaning There are many answers to this question. For me, God's existence is the meaning of life. Questions like why I exist in this world and what meaning do I have in this world, only God knows. So the meaning of religion is the meaning of life.
The above is my personal understanding of God and religion.
