“Snow White” is one of the most well-known fairy tale characters in Europe. As early as 1937, Disney put her The story was presented in animated form, and since then, the filmmakers have performed various versions of "Snow White." In 2012, the movie "Snow White and the Huntsman" was released. It abandoned the beauty and romance of fairy tales and made a bold adaptation of the story, but it ended sadly with a poor reputation. After 4 years, "Hunter: Winter's War" once again appeared on the big screen as a sequel. Even though the story and characters of the film are much fuller than the previous work, the opening score is still more than 60% lower than that of the previous work, and the word of mouth continues to decline.
The film revolves around the "Hunter" played by Chris Hemsworth. First, a prequel is used to complete the background of the Hunter's character, and at the same time, it undertakes the plot after the defeat of the evil queen Ravenna. Before she came to Snow White's kingdom, the evil queen Ravenna had conquered many kingdoms with the power of the magic mirror, and her sister Freya was always by her side. Unlike Ravenna's sinister viciousness, Freya is very kind, but after experiencing the betrayal of her lover and the loss of her young daughter, the magic in her body is stimulated, and she turns into a ruthless Snow Queen. Freya left her sister Ravenna and created a frozen kingdom of ice and snow for thousands of miles. As the hunters grew up, Eric the "Hunter" and Sara the hunter became the two most powerful warriors under the Ice Queen. They achieved brilliant achievements for the Queen, but fell in love against the Queen's rules, and this love was blocked by a thick wall of ice at the beginning.
Seven years later, Snow White, who defeated Ravenna, has established her own kingdom, but the whereabouts of the magic mirror containing the evil power are unknown, threatening the peace of the kingdom. Eric the "Hunter" took two dwarves to investigate. On the way, Eric and Sarah reunited. The two resolved their misunderstandings and rekindled their love. They planned to overthrow the Snow Queen's rule. At this time, the magic mirror fell into the hands of the Snow Queen Freya, who accidentally released the evil soul of her sister Ravenna hidden in the magic mirror. When Eric and Sarah joined hands with the hunters to fight against the two queens, Freya learned the truth of losing her beloved daughter: it turned out that Ravenna learned through the magic mirror that her sister's daughter would surpass her own beauty, so she used Witchcraft killed Freya's child. The good-natured Freya chose to fight against her evil sister, and sacrificed her life to protect the hunters she cultivated. As the magic mirror was destroyed, the evil queen who coexisted with the magic mirror was finally wiped out.
Although it is a sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsman", there is almost no trace of Snow White in "The Hunter: Winter's War". In order to allow viewers who are not familiar with the previous movie to have a relatively complete viewing experience, the director and screenwriter tried to connect a brand new story with a jumping timeline. However, due to the improper arrangement of the front and rear, and the lack of novelty of the plot itself, this "ingenious" story lost its due appreciation. The narration of the "prequel" part accounts for less than one-third of the whole film, which is a little hasty and perfunctory, and the basic context is mainly clarified by narration. The "postscript", which is the highlight, is too protracted. Several fighting scenes and the climax of the "Winter Battle" were not enough to arouse the audience's interest. Instead, the emotional scene between the hero and heroine and the two pairs of dwarves stole the show.
In addition to the weak plot, the film's portrayal of the characters is also a major failure. First of all, the setting of several new characters lacks enough novelty. The Snow Queen Freya obviously bears the shadow of Princess Elsa in "Frozen". Whether it is the presentation of ice and snow magic, or the composition of the characters' fate, they are quite similar to Elsa. Another new character, Sarah, is set to be a female warrior similar to Katniss in "The Hunger Games", not only in appearance, but also in the same bow and arrow skills.
The logic and motives of the characters in the film cannot stand up to scrutiny. For example, Eric and Sarah, the key characters driving the plot, from mutual affection to falling in love to being willing to sacrifice for love, this series of emotional changes are rather blunt due to the lack of details. They were still fighting bloody battles one second before, and the next second they could tell each other their warmth in the cave. Just because the love between the two is not convincing, the movie's claim that "love conquers everything" can only be a pale slogan. The same problem exists with the portrayal of the Snow Queen Freya. Her character in the film has changed a lot, but every change is very sudden, and the character image inevitably tends to be flat. In addition, the film's motives for the villain Ravenna are still very old-fashioned. The reason why she killed her sister's daughter was because she was always obsessed with "who is the most beautiful person in the world". Nothing new and a little far-fetched . Even if several actresses have both beauty and strength, it is difficult to support these roles that are not full enough.
Although the plot is not good, the visual effects of "Hunter: Winter's War" still adhere to the production level of the previous work. The ice and snow scenes and magical atmosphere created by the three-dimensional animation are quite gorgeous, especially the presentation of the magic skills of the two queens is very shocking. Colleen Atwood, who won three Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, also contributed a luxurious costume feast to the film. Colleen Atwood is best at creating fantasy movies. She was also responsible for the costume design of "Snow White and the Huntsman", so the costumes of the two movies are in the same line. The Snow Queen's robe is made of metal material. Her crown, ring and mask are all based on owls and create the effect of crystal; while the Evil Queen's costume design echoes the Snow Queen's, using black and gold. The main color, the crown and the fingers are designed with the crow as the prototype, and the golden feather coat is a delicate work completed by four workers working ten hours a day for a month. Even if the audience is not interested in the plot of the film, they will still be amazed by the beautiful costumes of the two queens.
The reason why "Hunter: Winter's War" is not satisfactory is largely due to its lack of creative imagination, and it also exposes the embarrassment of Hollywood movies in the selection of materials. From the "God of War" crash "Clash of the Gods", to "Hercules" crashing "Son of Zeus: Hercules", to "Snow White: The Mirror of the Mirror" crashing "Snow White and the Huntsman", movie themes After the series of big crashes, the drawbacks of Hollywood's low originality have also emerged. However, it has never been easy to adapt a classic fairy tale or mythical story. Breaking out of the context of the original story, the dull plot is a defect that computer special effects and costume modeling cannot make up for. Because the audience expects not only a visual blockbuster with a gorgeous empty shell, but a sincere work that is complete and sophisticated from the story to the production.
