I think film criticism is a very one-sided thing, so I am also happy to contribute a little one-sidedness to my favorite movies.
I don't think the movie is about a love story.
I'm not very happy with the abnormal love that many film critics label, because my understanding of this movie is not in the love it highlights.
Love is a relationship. Some people are attracted to each other. because of the similarity.
And some people are attracted to each other because they both have something in them that they can't get or are different from.
The movie gives a very clear contrast, that is, the contrast between the two people and their communication and life.
Harold and Maude both love funerals, but for different reasons.
Harold loves funerals because of the smell of death.
Maude loves funerals, the feeling of reincarnation and vitality.
Harold lived in an arranged, dull, colorless living environment.
And Maude is free and cheerful. Not subject to any laws and regulations.
In that scene, the way Harold and Maude are under the tree, I think it's like the movie "Heartbeat" and
these two people make me feel very cute. I can't find another adjective.
At the end of the film, Maude leaves in the way he set himself.
Harold drove his hearse Jaguar, like Maude, down a cliff.
As the camera moves up, we see Harold holding the piano, playing a tune, and bouncing away.
I saw a review saying maybe the real Harold ended up leaving with the crashed car. And jumping on the edge of the cliff is the cheerful soul of the young man.
It doesn't matter which way we interpret this ending, I think it was the dull, lifeless Harold of the past that crashed with the car.
And along with the sound of the piano that Maude sent away, it is the continuation of Maude's free and cheerful soul full of curiosity about the world.
In short, just like the movie poster, Maude held up this bright yellow umbrella and held Harold's hand, free and cheerful, away from those dull suicidal tendencies and depressing environments.
Truly a movie worth watching.
