The first level of meaning:
The future society advocates that humans should not have any emotions. Once they find out that they have emotions, they will be "infected" and will need treatment or even be executed. After the male and female protagonists realize that they are "ill", they go from doubting, to confirming that they are not sick at all, that it is right to have emotions, and then to meet and leave this place that vows to kill emotions. Why kill human emotion? It could be to keep emotions from getting in the way of technology, it could be to increase productivity, etc. How similar today's society is, only the movies are more extreme. In today's society, people are not keen on discussing emotions. The financial industry and the technology industry have become the mainstream of the world's industries. The highest paying occupations also lie in these two industries. These two industries are the most rational and the least emotional. In the financial industry, numbers appear the most, and the technology industry is a series of professional symbols. And literature and art, the most emotional industry, has become a niche industry. It cannot make money, has low attention, and the number of employees is far less than that of finance and technology. Among the majors in the university, business is always a hot topic, and computer is always sounding tall. Liberal arts students are labeled as "no future" and "no money", artists are marginalized, and many people keep them at a distance. It is generally believed that a person with strong emotions is a glass-hearted person who is fragile and cannot achieve great things; and a person who has only rationality is a strong person. When did humans begin to hide their nature, fear to expose their emotions, and even laugh at other people who show negative emotions? It is the moment when technology and capital appear. Technology is a great advance for human beings, but not at the expense of stifling human nature. Reason and emotion should complement each other and cannot be separated from each other. But in China, science and engineering are the mainstream, and liberal arts are not mainstream. It hurts to think about it. Once out of the street, indifference is more than enthusiasm. People cannot become the masters of technology, but become its slaves. Human beings are getting more and more sluggish about emotions, and they don’t know how to feel and how to express emotions. The material world is richer and the spiritual world is more desolate. So the first level of meaning is that the author of the story satirizes this rational-dominated society that gradually stifles human emotions. If you don't obey, people in power and those around you will do everything in their power to force you to obey.
Second level of meaning:
If you are unfortunate enough to be in a group you don't fit in, the only way out is to leave. In such a group, you also have to hide your emotions like them, like the walking dead every day. No one cares about your feelings, and it's superfluous for you to care about other people's emotions. That feeling is really uncomfortable. It's not anyone's fault, it's just that you are not the same kind. How important it is to find a group of people similar to you. Men and women, they would rather go to a place where life and death are uncertain, rather than being assimilated by those who have no emotions. From the beginning, you are the same as everyone else, until you finally choose to escape, it is a very struggling and painful process, because during this process you must have tried to deny yourself countless times, and no one will be willing to admit that you are an outlier in this group. It takes courage to be able to distinguish right from wrong in the end and choose to withdraw. The hero and heroine would rather take risks and bravely pursue to be themselves, rather than being someone they don't want to be. How many people in reality have the courage to do so? Therefore, the second meaning is that the author hopes that people will learn to follow their own hearts, be brave to be themselves, leave different ethnic groups, find their own equal ethnic groups, and satirize those mediocre people who are afraid of being different and follow the crowd.
In the end, although the male protagonist has lost his emotions, he has feelings for the female protagonist again. It proves that human nature cannot be killed at all. Technology and capital are only means of human survival, and cannot replace human nature. Don't put the cart before the horse and destroy emotion for the sake of production. Science and technology is indeed a great progress for mankind, but isn't the lack of modern human emotion a big step backward for mankind?
This film also reflects the differences between the values of Western society and China. Western values first respect individual values, human nature and nature, but discussing these issues in China is like an alternative. Now, it is good to come across a domestic movie that is more like a movie, not to mention a philosophical movie that thinks about the ultimate destiny of mankind. There are similar problems like philosophy, and it is very common for Westerners to discuss them and study them. But in China, very few people think about these issues. why? First of all, is the "quality education" claimed by the Ministry of Education really aimed at improving the quality of students? Countless corrupt officials are high-achieving students who graduated from prestigious universities, and many students with good grades do not even have the most basic sympathy. They compare themselves and are arrogant. This is the result of quality education today. To say "quality education" is really disgusting to others and disgusting to myself. In China, only money and power measure a person's worth, and nothing else matters. In this sinister society, it is good not to be harmed by others. Everyone is in danger, and no one will study those profound truths. Therefore, if people in a country are taboo to talk about politics, talk about philosophy, and talk about ethics, it means that there is a big problem in this country.
One star buckle does not see any spark between the male and female protagonists. In addition, the rhythm of the first half is slow and a little dull.
