The Seamstress is an Australian film written and directed by Jocelyn Mulhouse. The story takes place in Australia in 1951. Tilly, a high-end fashion tailor, was expelled from the town by the villagers because she was accused of murdering her classmate Stuart when she was 10 years old.
The overall tone of the film is gloomy, and the sky, earth, houses and vehicles present a gray scene. The protagonist leaves the factory under such a setting, with makeup and temperament that are completely incommensurate with the environment here. The mother of Jasmine, who became a mad woman by the local villagers, was actually happy when she saw her daughter return, but after seeing Tilly's series of actions, she showed a mad woman's resistance to strangers. She knows why she wants to come back, she just doesn't want her to be hurt here again.
At this time, Tilly is no longer the homeless Tilly who was laughed at by her classmates and the surrounding children, and was beaten and scolded arbitrarily by the teacher. The first time I officially appeared in front of the villagers was in the final of a ball game in a very neighboring town. When she appeared in the viewing area in a bright red dress, everyone was attracted by her beauty, women were jealous, men were jealous, and players couldn't play with peace of mind. The town's player captain, Teddy, asks her for help, and she goes back and changes her clothes, interfering with the opposing players. The result of the game was, of course, that the town team won. The first person to come to the small tailor shop on Mount Tilly to find her custom clothes was his old classmate, the daughter of a modest but ambitious township grocer. The price Tilly made for her was that she knew that on the day of the crime, the female classmate she had sought help for in desperation did not help her, but instead told the little boy where she was hiding. Tilly's skills allow her to make stunning appearances and capture her crush, William. More and more people are amazed at Tilly's craftsmanship and come here with their purse fabrics and flattering smiles begging for glory. And all this has not changed people's perception of Tilly, she is still a murderer in people's eyes, although they have only heard of it.
Tilly is constantly looking for clues to retrieve the memory of the day. As things became clear, the roles of others in this matter also became apparent. The mayor turned out to be Tilly's irresponsible father, who cheated the marriage in order to obtain the inheritance inherited from his current wife, abandoning Tilly's mother and daughter. In his heart, there is probably no emotion. At the end of the film, Tilly's mother passed out on the street. The mayor, who was resting while reading the newspaper, watched this scene with a contemptuous smile on his lips, and then raised the newspaper to the top. rise. He was constantly flirting with women, cheating, and his wife, who had become a hypersensitive patient after losing her child, thought he was playing with everyone. When it happened, it was possible for him, as the mayor, to know the truth. However, he chose to forcibly send Tilly away from her mother. If the mayor is actively calculating sinister evil, then his son, the dead one, Tilly's half-brother, is a reckless evil. He mocked and threatened Tilly arbitrarily, and tried to punish Tilly with a bull-like attacking posture. Tilly instinctively avoided, and finally he died on the spot.
Another is cowardly evil, Tilly's teacher. She said she was the only one who witnessed the scene and described in vivid language the sight of Tilly's murder of the boy. This kind of her making out of thin air exposed her fear of authority but bullying nature, and it was her testimony that led to Tilly being considered a murderer by everyone.
Like her cowardly but kind in the film is the sheriff. Fearing that his transvestite hobbies would be known, he chose to cowardly succumb to everything that happened, even though he instinctively felt that such a confession would not stand up to scrutiny. Unlike the teacher, he is apologetic and conscious of the evil he has done. Later in the film, for fear that Tilly will be blamed for making cookies laced with marijuana, he takes the blame for no apparent reason. And Tilly had already forgiven him, and when he was taken away, he hugged Tilly and thanked her for everything she had brought to his life. Teddy, the football captain who truly loves Tilly. Here Tilly showed his infinite tolerance and love, and he made Tilly soft and warm. To convince Tilly that there is no curse and that Tilly deserves a good life, she jumps into a barn full of sorghum and suffocates to her death. The rest are residents who think they are innocent and pure. The old drugstore gentleman looked kind, but he pulled Tilly behind his back and pointed out that his mother was a slut. The grocer's daughter accepts that Tilly is doing her favors, but secretly talks about slandering Tilly. The strange eyes and remarks of the innocent-looking residents to Tilly seemed insignificant, making a 10-year-old child feel helpless and fearful all the time. They bully the weak arbitrarily without knowing it, and Tilly, who has grown up strong enough, can't bear this kind of slander from them. I always thought that my misfortune, the misfortune I brought to the people around me, stemmed from my own curse. So when real love appeared, she didn't dare to approach. At the end of the film, Tilly helped the neighboring town win the competition as a costume designer, and left the town with a more determined and powerful self. The burning flames burned down the hut and the town, as well as Tilly's last doubts and nostalgia here. And those residents returning from neighboring towns may not have known how they destroyed their homes when they saw the flames.
When I was watching this film, I thought of "Dog Town". The ignorant and ignorant villagers in the closed villages quietly released their malice to the single woman without parents. . The film ends with the family of a strange woman destroying this malicious little village.
In real life, how many people are creating such evil without knowing it.
