, the youthful "desire"

Classic rock, tight vest, handsome face, beautiful body, scorching foundation... This is not Abercrombie & Fitch, this is director Linklater's new work "When You Are Young".

Richard Linklater, dubbed "The Magician of Time" by fans, once created the "Love Is" trilogy, which is like an arithmetic sequence, separated by nine years. The previous year's "Boyhood", which took eleven years to shoot, was even more highly praised. It is not difficult to see that the director has a paranoid persistence and obsession with "time".

For almost every film of his, either can be summed up in one sentence, or can't be explained in twenty sentences. There are not too many ups and downs or twists and turns in the plot, and all the shots recorded are the inadvertent bits and pieces of life. This also echoes the philosophy of life in "Boyhood": only in those in-between moments can we discover the true meaning of life.

The same is true for this film. The director uses light brushstrokes to record the interesting experiences of a college freshman and a group of his baseball teammates in the weekend before the start of school. Jake, played by Blake Jenner in Glee, a budding baseball pitcher, with apprehension and anticipation, moved into a villa arranged by the school for the baseball team on a Thursday afternoon before the start of school, and met a group of people. Not a reliable senior teammate. They weren't all friendly, and they didn't need another pitcher, but there were still a few warm and friendly "old drivers" who played the landlord's friendship and let Jake feel the baptism of "college culture". accompanied by a song of sugar mountain gang, the camera followed an Oldsmobile 442 muscle car, and five muscle men squeezed in the car, instantly bringing the audience back to the simple and beautiful 80s.

From the costumes and hairstyles, to the scene design, to the soundtrack, the movie has a strong retro style. This kind of retro does not have any cheap sentimental sales, but reveals a kind of moisturizing and silent indifference. Because Linklater clearly knows that retro is a very personal thing, and everyone has different feelings. Instead of seeking those rich nostalgic memories, it is better to create a convincing sense of the times and let the audience feel Take what you need.

This is a movie about baseball, and the director is patient enough to let these young people walk on the training ground for the first time halfway through the movie. This arrangement made the film not fall into the stereotype of campus sports, and made the first group training full of surprises and fun. After watching this film, many friends around me said that it is difficult to resonate with it, after all, there are huge cultural differences between China and the United States (and the film inevitably objectifies women, making it difficult for female audiences to identify with it). In fact, not only us, but even in the American audience, this group of jocks (translated as "sports special admissions" seems to be very grounded) is only a minority, and most audiences are either envious or disgusted in college. group of people. To some extent, the movie is also washing away their stereotypes for this special group. They are not just big men with developed limbs and simple minds, nor are they just bullying with their heads held high and arrogant, they are also emotional and cute side.

Interestingly, although I liked , the movie didn't bring back too many memories of college admissions, as mentioned earlier, the difference in culture and mentality. Instead, it makes me miss going back to school every Sunday night in middle school. As a resident student, returning to school on Sunday is always the best way to end a weekend: clean up your mood, organize your thoughts, and devote yourself to the intense study of the next week...

Bullshit! ! This is a rare precious vacuum time between parents and the school. It is the reunion of a few buddies in the dormitory after a 48-hour short-term separation. If such a night is not used well, how can it be worthy of the parents' hope and the school's ardent expectations. ? So whether it's sweating on the court, flipping through banned comic books in the library, or exploring the dark side of the school on campus, we're not going to walk gently into that good night. Although compared with young people in the United States, our nightlife is a little dirty and a big one, but the relaxed (salty and wet) mood and the throbbing of youth are not lacking in the same purpose.

Linklater's films can feel loose, but never incomprehensible, because usually near the end, the director will habitually point out the theme through the dialogue of the characters. And this philosophical undertone, revealed in casual chatter, gives the film an early Godard style: young men and women doing nothing, free spirits unfettered.

“Things only mean as much as the meaningfulness we allow them to have.”

As the professor wrote "Frontiers are where you find them" on the blackboard, the protagonist smiled slightly and fell asleep. Four years of college years may really be a dream that you don't want to wake up from.
