In ancient Chinese prisons, prisoners sentenced to death had their own separate death row. There was usually a tiger's head painted on the wall of the cell door. Some people say that the tiger head on the top of the prison door is not a tiger, but a divine beast (bì àn) representing fairness and justice. In any case, Hutoumen later became a reference to death row, presumably the translator expanded its scope to refer to the prison, or simply implied that the entire R17 cell could not escape death.
