Today I’m introducing a classic black-and-white movie of 1948, "Blood Sands". This movie is produced by Warner Bros. and is an adventure drama written and directed by John Houston. It tells the story of three homeless men who met in search of gold, but in the process of rushing together for gold, they fought against each other and intrigue. The film won the 21st Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay. Movie lovers who like classic and old films should not miss this film. The background of the film is set in Mexico in the 1920s. The protagonist Fred Dubici is a homeless man in the western United States who seeks life here. He works with Bob Curtin, a fellow American who he just met, but is cheated by his boss. Without getting a share of the wages, the desperate two came to a cheap hotel, where they met Howard, an old man who talked about his gold rush experience. The next day, Dubusi and Curtin met the boss who was owed their wages, and got some money after beating him violently. The two took the money and pretended to be hunters to find Howard, and discussed with him to form a gold rush team up the mountain to find gold. The road to gold was not easy. On the train, the three men had a gun battle with the robbers coming from the horse. When they went up the mountain, they met the roaring wind. Stumbled all the way and finally found Jinsha, but in the night's conversation, Dubyxi showed his distrust of his companions for the first time. During the day, Dolbyxie was digging in the mine. Unexpectedly, the frame of the mine was not strong and collapsed on Dolbyxie. After a moment of hesitation, Cotin chose to save Dubyxie. Dubyxie said he owed Cotin for help. Good grace, but when everyone was resting in the evening, Dubusi and Curtin had a quarrel about money. In the middle of the night, the two stood up to check the harvested sands. The next day Dubusi expressed serious doubts that his companion was calculating himself, and the person who asked to go to town to supply supplies should be replaced by Curtin. Curtin learned about the wanted robber in the town. When he turned to the store to buy items, he met an unidentified Cody. After a conversation, Curtin didn't want to have too much contact with Cody, but Cody followed him. After going up the mountain, Cody insisted on staying in the mountain to follow the gold rush team. When the three of the team were discussing about killing Cody, the robber also went up the mountain and met the team, so the team could only leave Cody to deal with the robber. The robber wanted to change the guns of the gold rush squad, but the squad strongly refused, so the two groups engaged in a fierce exchange of fire. During the battle, Cody was hit by ammunition and died. Losing a firepower point, Dolbyxie's group frowned like a disaster. Fortunately, the federal forces arrived in time to suppress the bandits, and the band of robbers fled. The three of Dubisi who survived the attack by the robbers checked the wallet of the dead Cody and found that Cody was a good man who loved his wife to find a way out in Mexico. The three buried Cody. Howard said that there were many crises along the way and the gold rush should end as soon as possible. After some argument, the three tied the sands to the back of the donkey and were ready to go down the mountain. At night, a group of native Indians came to the camp of the gold mining team and told Howard that there was a seriously ill child in their village. Howard decided to follow the Indians to leave the camp and go to the village for treatment. Wait until the day Howard returns to the rescue. Indian villagers said that the gold rush team must come to the village as a guest. Dubuisi was unwilling to delay the trip. The three decided to leave Howard to the village alone. Curtin said that he could take Howard's share of sands down the mountain. After sending Howard away, Curtin pointed a gun at Dubuisi because Dubuisi wanted to swallow Howard’s gold. Dubuisi bit Curtin in another attempt. Taking advantage of Curtin’s attention, he grabbed the gun and was in the woods. He shot Curtin. But Curtin did not die. He was rescued by the passing Indians and sent to Howard. Curtin told Howard of Dubuisi's bad behavior, so Howard and Curtin led a team to search for Dubuisi. Dubyxi is not so good Fortunately, with a few donkeys carrying Sands, they met three robbers who were hunted down by the troops. The robbers killed Dolby and took away the team’s belongings. Unfortunately, the robbers didn’t know Sands and thought it was just a few bags of sand. They were scattered on the ground, and the robbers who entered the city were quickly recognized by the people in the town and executed. When Howard and Curtin and the others felt that in the town, Dubusi and the robbers were dead, and the sands were gone with the wind. The two couldn't help laughing at each other when they learned the ending of the gold rush. After laughing, Howard told Curtin that he had decided to stay with the Indians. Curtin also said that he would find another way out. The two waved goodbye, and the film ended here. The leading actor in this film is the legendary movie star Humphrey Bogart who has starred in classic movies such as Casablanca and Dragon and Phoenix. In the film, Fred Dubuisi, who has come to a foreign country to beg for life with a face full of troubles, is very vividly portrayed by Bogart when he is suspicious of his companions when he settles in the mountains, and then finally kills his companions because of greed. It is worth mentioning that Walter Houston, who played Howard in this film, and director John Houston are father-son relationship. They won the best actor and best director respectively, which made the father and son win Oscars together.

    1. I have to think of Akira Kurosawa, no wonder Houston is the idol of many American directors. 2. The three male protagonists are all good, and the characters' personalities are deduced. 3. The screenwriter is the director himself. There seem to be not many directors in mainland China who have this ability. 4. All kinds of turning points, the meaning that the director wants to express is revealed little by little.

The answer my friend, it's blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre quotes

  • Dobbs: Why am I elected to go to the village? Why me instead of you and Curtin? Oh, don't think I don't see through that. You two've thrown in against me. The two days I'd be gone would give you plenty of time to discover where my goods are, wouldn't it?

Howard: If you feel along those lines, why don't you take your goods with you?

Dobbs: And run the risk of having them taken from me by bandits?

Howard: If you was to run into bandits, you'd be out of luck anyway. They'd kill you for the shoes on your feet.

Dobbs: Oh, so that's it. Everything's clear now. You're hoping bandits will get me. That would save you a lot of trouble, wouldn't it? And your consciences wouldn't bother you none, neither.

  • Cody: You know, you've got to hand it to the Mexicans when if comes to swift justice. Once the Federales get their mitts on a criminal, they know just what to do with him. They hand him a shovel, tell him where to dig, when he's dug deep enough, they tell him to put the shovel down, smoke a cigarette, and say his prayers. In another five minutes, he's being covered over with the dirt he dug out.
