The endless desire of humanity

When Curtin, one of the supporting actors in the movie, stood at the entrance of the cave and hesitated not to save Dopsey who was trapped inside, the movie began to become more and more interesting.

01 story

Like the translation of a western movie, when you look at it, you will feel that the story told by the gold rush is more like a noir film. It is not so much a combination of western films and noir films, but rather a story about human nature under the guise of gold rush films. In the end, the whole story looked more like a fable, the backlash of greed, and everything was empty in the end.

Fred (played by Humphrey Bogart), Howard (played by Walter Houston), and Curtin (played by Tim Holt) three strangers met for gold panning, and then under the leadership of the old man Howard finally found the real After the gold, everything began to change quietly.

The movie tells the story of the three gold rushes and the success of the gold rush. Those seemingly redundant plots are full of profound meaning, all hinting at the ending and suggesting humanity.

02 role

Fred

Fred, played by Bogart, is the villain, but he is also the protagonist.

In the first act of the movie, he is begging in ragged clothes. Although he can't live up to his face, he can still beg for a while with his self-esteem.

Interestingly, all three of his beggings in the movie were directed at the same person (the American in a white suit with a guest appearance by director John Houston). In the end, the person who was begged couldn't bear it.

Three times begging, the first time to buy lottery tickets for dinner, the second time to have hair trimmed (the oily head is so ugly, it is seriously suspected that the director was deliberate), and the third time was quickly spent, so there was Begging for the fourth time, and then ran into a liar.

From these three beggings, it can be seen that Fred is a person who only cares about his eyes. His eyes can only see the people and things under his nose, and he can't see any more. As he said himself, he only saw the hand giving the money and the money giving, not the person giving the money at all.

Later, after the three of them chatted with money at night, what were their plans? Fred’s plan was completely different from the other two. He wanted to take a Turkish bath, buy a bunch of clothes, go to the cafe to order everything and then scold the waiter for a bit of blood. Shower head, this is not an intention, this is a kind of profligacy or a kind of vent for the previous lack of money.

This series of performance heralded the transformation and madness of Fred later.

When the gold gets closer and closer to him, it is also when he gets crazier and crazier. The gold that is readily available right now is the same as when he was a foreman and only got back his own wages, which he thought he deserved.

In fact, Fred after the transformation represents the evil of human nature.

Even if it is his villainous heart that saves the abdomen of a gentleman, Curtin who mistakenly wanted to kill the poisonous lizard can not change his already greedy heart in the slightest. The poisonous lizard matter will only make them more susceptible to each other.

And the various psychological changes after he thought he had killed Curtin were very interesting. Although he was afraid, it was not because he was afraid of doing this, and besides being afraid, he was worried that the person killed by him was not dead.

The irony in the movie was all focused on Fred. After hearing Howard’s account of the gold rush, he once firmly believed that he would never get lost but would only take his share, but then he Everything I do is slap her face.

Not only was he lost, he also had murderous malice. And this kind of malice eventually brought a murderous disaster to himself.

Fred, who was on the road alone, happened to encounter the three robbers who had escaped.

Cotin

Among the three people, Curtin has always been in a subordinate position. When two people are subordinate to Fred, when three people are subordinate to two other people.

But Curtin is a representative of the goodness of human nature.

In fact, when the three people chat about their future plans after they have money, they can clearly see what kind of people they are.

Curtin hopes to have an orchard of his own. After hard work, he plays guitar and sings around the bonfire in the evening.

At the entrance of the cave, he also hesitated, wandering between good and evil greed, but this hesitation was only for a short while.

Fred was buried in the cave. When he stood at the entrance of the cave and shouted that no one answered, his eyes began to flicker, then he turned to leave, but he stopped after only one step, turned back, and walked firmly. Fredela came out from the entrance of the cave.

From this moment on, he made his own choice, so he thought about giving the gold to the widow of Cody who tragically died, and would resolutely not allow Fred to swallow gold when Howard is temporarily absent. There was a conflict with Fred.

He caused a murder, but he was also lucky enough.

Howard

The old man played by Walter Houston stole the limelight. He is the image of a detached wise man, he understands what kind of greedy nature a person can show in front of gold, or he has already seen what kind of person Fred is.

Of course, Curtin was still very calm in his reaction when Fred shot at him and put himself to death, or he had expected such a day.

If he doesn't love gold, it is absolutely hypocritical and untrue, but he can laugh out loud when all the gold returns to the dust with the wind. Even if the laughter is helpless, joking, and unwilling, it is ridiculous that it is free and easy and let go in the end.

Rather than saying that Howard is a deified character, he is better to say that he is the ultimate human image, an ideal character, he can see through, free and easy, and can put it down.

03Relations

The relationship between Fred, Curtin and Howard seems to be the most stable triangular relationship in geometry. In the gold rush, as long as this relationship is maintained, there is a high probability that there will be no mistakes.

And howard plays an important role in this. He is like a Libra player, constantly paying attention to the Libra in front of him. As long as one side is tilted, he has to add some weights on the lighter side, so that the Libra can continue to maintain balance, so even if Fred Becoming more and more eloquent in front of gold, and nothing unprecedented has happened to break this relationship.

But the director arranged the plot for Howard to leave. He saved the drowning child and became a guest of the tribe, and he had to accept their courtesy, so Howard left, and this triangle relationship was also broken.

04 plot

Regarding the death plot in the movie, neither exaggerated nor deliberate (although it has something to do with the censorship), whether it is adding Cody who wants to get a share of the pie, or the protagonist Fred Dobbysie. Cody was shot through the throat and died silently. And Fred was cut several times by the robber, and died without warning.

05 ending

In the end, when all the dust returned to the dust, the picture was fixed on the cactus, and the cloth bag that originally contained the golden earth was hung on the cactus, whistling with the wind.

Everything was gone, it seemed to be back to the original point, but it was not really back to the original point. They went through a catastrophe-like test. The gold was tempting but also pierced, it can bleed, or it may lose its life. .
