The Kid (1921)

continues to break my movie viewing record and refresh it. This is the oldest one in the history of the film. The film was released in 1921, 90 years ago. There is not much more to say, Charlie Chaplin is a genius film master.

The duration of the movie is very short and the story is relatively simple. The film is based on a main story, which uses many short stories to connect the whole film. The main story tells the story of children being abandoned, growing up, and mother-child reunion. A mother was forced to abandon her child helplessly, and her child was discovered by a tramp. Only after seeing the note with the baby did the tramp realize that it was an abandoned baby, so he kindly adopted the baby. Five years later, the child grew up, and the mother who abandoned the baby became a well-known actor, and discovered her child by chance. Through a reward, the mother and child were finally reunited. The branch of the movie is very trivial, telling stories about children working with homeless people, getting sick, escaping from government arrest, and so on. In other words, the story of this movie is made up of many small fragments.

Although the time of this film is short, through many short stories, the film always revolves around the theme of the film-poor and happy. The whole film is depicting these two aspects. In the aspect of poverty, it can be seen from the pictures that the home furnishings of the homeless, the food they eat, and the clothes they wear are all rather primitive, which can be described as shabby. Especially what the two of them ate was sticky, and looked quite disgusting, not knowing what they were eating. There are many happy aspects, such as their work-children smashing glass, homeless people installing glass, fighting with street gangsters, flirting with police wives, and so on. These plots are all telling us that even though their lives are embarrassing, they are poor and happy!

The many short stories in the film also deepen the shaping of the characters and portray the feelings between the characters. The battle between the homeless man and the asylum personnel can be seen. For the sake of the children, he can desperately fight with them, even if he punches and kicks, climbs up and down, or jumps in a car. Through these, we can understand that the tramp is not only a kind person, but also has a tough and tenacious heart. How is his behavior different from his biological father?

The dream at the end of the film has a different meaning, but my understanding is limited. I can only understand that this is the tramp’s yearning for a better life or a hint of future life, suggesting a change in his life. The scene of the angel section adds a small storm: the city of angels has a bad guy, and it becomes uneasy. What's the point of this? I don't understand it. It turns out that Charlie Chaplin's movies are also very profound.

Since it is a Charlie Chaplin movie, the typical features of his movie are naturally there, such as funny actions, funny scenes, music closely integrated with the plot, etc. I won't say much. In short, Charlie Chaplin can always express a kind of non-artificial funny in the most natural way, and the master of comedy deserves it. In addition, as a movie released in 1921, the technical aspects are quite rudimentary, especially the angel flying scene, which can be fake. However, there are many good-looking places in the movie, which can completely cover up the technical flaws.

The actors in this film are outstanding. Needless to say, Charlie Chaplin's performance, it's just that he is much younger in this film, after all, this is his early movie. The performance of the outcast actor Jackie Coogan is breathtaking. At the age of 7 he can make a silent film performance superb, which is really amazing. Using words to describe his performance is pale, only one word is enough-genius! His perfect performance with Charlie Chaplin makes the movie so perfect!

In general, a short and powerful masterpiece. It took less than 60 minutes to tell a complete story, with happiness, laughter, and sadness. Coupled with the perfect performances of two talented actors, it is difficult to not become a classic. It's definitely worth seeing.
