In 1941. Shanghai.

This is a cathedral in Shanghai. Tim Graham, a twelve-year-old boy, is singing hymns in the choir. His babysitter looked at him in the hall with undivided attention.

(Narrator): "In 1941, China and Japan had been fighting in an undeclared war for four years. The Japanese army occupied a large area of China’s rural areas and many towns. In Shanghai, thousands of Westerners were involved in international treaties. Under diplomatic protection, they continue to live in the original way of living. This way of life has been formed since the British came here in the nineteenth century: they built banks, hotels, office buildings, churches and Housing, these buildings may have been transplanted from places such as Liverpool or Sulei.

Now, their era has passed away. In the outskirts of Shanghai, the Japanese are staring at them, waiting for... "The Jinsoo Port Incident."

2

In the car.

Lao Yang, the driver of the Graham family, drove a "Parker" car on the streets of residential districts in Shanghai. He wants to send Tim home. Tim was greedily reading a comic strip in the car.

There was a roar of planes in the sky, which meant that war was imminent.

Old Yang drove the "Pike" car into Tim Graham's house, the gate of that beautiful house. Looking through the car window, Tim saw a beggar sitting on the ground by the gate, with an empty can in front of him. Tim stared at the beggar.

3

Tim’s garden has a swimming pool.

Tim was riding a bicycle and circling around the swimming pool, holding a model airplane in his hand, and then pretending that the model airplane caught fire. At this time, his nanny was following him, and Tim's father was playing golf. He noticed that Tim was riding into the lawn, and he warned Tim.

Father (to Jim): "Jimi, don't go into the grass! Jimmy! Don't go into the grass!"

Tim threw away the "burning" plane and ran towards his father.

Tim: "Dad, who will win?"

Father: "Of course it is us!"

Tim: "I mean the war."

Father: "The Chinese war is not ours."

Tim: "Then we are lucky?! Live here and have everything!"

The nanny picked up the plane from the ground, looked at Tim dissatisfied, and said softly, "Naughty!"

Jim's father said to Jim: "It's very interesting. I work hard, and the whole family is lucky."

Tim turned and glanced at the beggar outside the door.

Tim (to his father): "Luckier than him!"

Father: "Lucky than most people! All lucky!"

Then, his father wanted to play golf again. He specifically said to Tim: "Go away, I'm a close shot." After that, he raised his hand to hit.

Tim (to father): "The Japanese will win. They have good planes and brave pilots. I wanted to join the Japanese Air Force in the past."

Tim's father slammed the ball. The ball flew to the building, and unfortunately penetrated the large French glass windows on the building.

Father (to Tim): "Oh, my goodness!"

Tim looked up and found a Japanese "Zero" plane flying over him. He took his model airplane from the nanny and said excitedly to his father: "Dad, look,'Zero', mine is also'Zero'."

4

Tim was drinking a bottle of milk. While looking at the refrigerator full of food, the nanny looked helplessly by the side.

Nanny: "Mrs. Graham won't let you eat before going to bed."

Tim (to the nanny): "Don't worry, I want to call!"

5

night. Graham's hall.

Tim took a glass of milk and a plate of food and walked into the hall. He walked up the stairs and passed his father's bedroom; he stopped in front of the open door and found that his father was burning various pieces of paper; at this time, the radio was broadcasting news.

Announcer: "The situation in the Far East is tense... the British expatriates evacuated to Australia and India... The "Eno" cruise ship departed from Shanghai yesterday... There were 450 British expatriates on board, and they all went to Hong Kong. It is estimated that there are about 15,000. The British who originally lived in the enemy-occupied areas have left within a few weeks. The talks between President Roosevelt and the Japanese ambassador to the United States are expected to make slight progress. It is reported that the Japanese army has strengthened to 50,000 troops in Indochina."

6

Tim enters his bedroom.

He was lying on the bed, looking up at the various model airplanes hanging on the ceiling. At this time, Tim's mother entered Tim's room.

Mother: "Hello! Ace pilot!"

Tim: "I dreamed of God!"

Mother: "What did he say?"

Tim: "Nothing to say, he is playing tennis. Maybe because of this, God is everywhere, you won't see him when you wake up."

Mother: "I don't know anything about God."

After the mother said, she wanted to leave, so she said goodbye to Tim.

Tim (to mother): "Maybe, he is...our dream...and we are his..."

Mother: "Go to sleep, there will be a reception at Lockwood's house tomorrow."

Tim: "Can I bring a glider?"

Mother nodded and said, "Dreaming is also an airplane."

She kissed Tim.

Tim (to mother): "If God is in the sky, is he also flying?"

Mother smiled and walked to the door.

The driver Lao Yang was standing next to the "Pike" car. The Grahams are neatly dressed, ready to go to Lockwood's house to attend the reception. Tim's father entered the car first, followed by Tim and his mother.

Father (to Tim): "Watch out for the plane and put it on the seat!"

Tim looked at the beggar. A policeman drove the beggar away.

9

daytime. Lockwood House.

The well-dressed guests came to the gate, 90% of them were Caucasian. The door opened, and the owner Lockwood and his wife appeared at the door. Lockwood dressed up as Santa Claus and sang hymns, and Mrs. Lockwood welcomed the guests warmly.

Lockwood (singing): "God bless you..."

10

daytime. Inside Lockwood's house.

Jim, his father, and Mr. Chen, a wealthy Chinese gentry, stood at the sumptuous cold table.

Chen (to Father Ji): "Leave Shanghai."

Tim's father (to Mr. Chen): "They threw us away."

A British guest drunk and stared at Mr. Chen, then turned to one of his British compatriots.

Drunken British: "Lockwood invited a Chinese!"

Tim's father was confused, he turned to Mr. Chen and said, "I'm sorry. Please don't mind."

Chen (to Father Ji): "British humor?"

Father Ji (to Chen): "Too much irrigation!"

Jim only takes food, and Mr. Chen and Jim's father continue to talk.

Father Ji (to Chen): "So, you think we have counted the days we are here!"

Chen (to Father Ji): "Our days are counted. However, we Chinese are more than you. You have been in Shanghai for more than 100 years, and it is just an incident. For the Japanese, four years did not produce any results. ."

Jifu (to Chen): "However, in terms of your agricultural harvest being destroyed, it is already too long. There are a million farmers living on charity."

Chen (to Father Ji): "The Japanese will also go hungry. We have guns, artillery, planes, and 500 million people fighting in the rear. After this war, we will still be here."

Lockwood walked towards them with a drink in his hand.

Lockwood (to Chen): "Oh, let's have a toast together."

Chen (to Lockwood): "It is always a pleasure to accept Mr. Lockwood's hospitality!"

British drunk (to Chen): "Yes, man. I mistakenly thought you were not Chinese."

11

Outside Lockwood's home.

Tim took the glider in hand and stood with Mr. Maxton in the corridor looking up at a Japanese "Zero" plane flying in the sky.

Maxton: "'Zero' plane?"

Tim (to Maxton): "Allied,'Zero'."

Maxton: "There are two machine guns?"

Tim: "Yes, two."

Maxton: "I have to rely on you to understand the war, especially about the air force. I heard that you are not a boy scout."

Tim: "I'm an athlete."

Tim held the glider and ran away, leaving Maxton.

Maxton: "Where are you going?"

Tim: "Go and see a place."

Tim disappeared behind a small hill. Tim's father came to Maxton's side.

Maxton (to season father): "Jim told me that he became an athlete."

Tim's father replied: "I always thought he was an athlete."

Tim's father handed Maxton a plate of food.

Father Season: "It's time to eat some!"

12

daytime. An abandoned airport.

Tim ran from Lockwood's backyard to an abandoned airport, still holding the glider high in his hand. He threw the glider into the sky, ran with the glider that was flying, and finally stopped in front of a dilapidated bomber. He excitedly climbed into the cockpit of the bomber, fiddled with various buttons, and pushed the lever forward. He saw the glider flying by.

Tim pretended to talk to the control tower by radio: "Please answer if you find an enemy plane."

Then he said as if talking with the control tower: "The enemy plane is coming from behind me!"

Tim pretended to be engaged in an air battle with the glider. The glider disappeared after gliding over a high slope. Tim climbed out of the bomber and ran towards the high slope. He stood behind the high slope. There was a trench in front of him. About one company of Japanese soldiers was guarded in the trench. A Japanese sergeant crawled out of the trench and walked to Jim's side.

Soon, Maxton and Tim's father hurried over, and they saw Tim and the Japanese sergeant.

Maxton (to Dief): "Stand, don't move."

Maxton and Tim's father stopped running. Tim slowly began to walk away in order to leave the Japanese sergeant.

Tim's father said to Tim, "Don't run!"

Tim came to Maxton and his father's side. The three slowly walked towards Lockwood's house.

Father Season (to Jim): "You missed the reception!"

Tim (to father): "I lost the plane."

Father Season: "Who picks it up?"

Tim turned to look at the Japanese soldiers.

Maxton (to Tim): "Don't look back."

Tim (to his father) "They seem to be waiting for something to happen."

Tim's father seems to blame his son.

Tim (to his father): "They don't seem to be very angry."

Maxton (to Tim): "It's not their indignation, but their patience."

Tim's father said to Maxton: "Now we need to help each other in the same boat."

Maxton (to the season father): "Let Mary go with the child first! Go to a safer place, Singapore!"

13

night. In the "Parker" car.

The driver Yang is sending the Graham family home. The car drove on the streets of Shanghai.

In the back seat, Jim’s father said to his mother: "Let’s go to the hotel to stay for a few days and see how the situation develops. I don’t want you and Jimmy to stay at home alone."

14

evening. Broadway Building.

Tim and Yi were lying on the hotel bed, playing with his silver "Zero" toy airplane. Later, he got up and went to the window to look at the Huangpu River outside the window. He saw a Japanese gunboat slowly passing the hotel. He also found that the gunboat was using a light to signal a tank parked near the hotel. . Tim also used his flashlight to flash and light up the gunboat. Suddenly, a loud noise appeared in the hotel, throwing Tim to the ceiling. Tim's father rushed into the room in his pajamas. Tim looked panicked.

Tim: "I just wanted to make a joke."

Father: "Don't stand at the window, put on your clothes, do as your mother tells us, we will leave right away."

Tim: "I'm already dressed."

15

evening. On the hotel stairs.

The stairs were crowded with panicked passengers, and the Tim family was among them, hurried downstairs with them.

Tim (to mother): "Am I still in school?"

Mother: "I won't go today. Let's go to Lao Yang to see if he can send us home."

Tim, his parents and some travelers hurried through the hotel lobby.

16

In the evening, in front of Broadway Daxia Gate.

Tim and his father walked out of the hotel. Large crowds ran on the street. There was chaos in the street. Tim's mother quickened her pace, and she pushed away from the crowd.

Mother: "I'm sorry."

Tim's father found that Old Yang was waiting for them by the "Pike" car across the road.

Tim's father greeted loudly: "Lao Yang!"

Jim's parents took him and ran to the car quickly. Several young people tried to squeeze into the car but were blocked by Old Yang.

The Tim family got in the car.

Father (to Lao Yang): "Lao Yang, go to Huangpu Beach."

The driver Lao Yang started the car and drove in the crowded crowd. At this time, Japanese soldiers and tanks began to move into the city. Tim moved his seat, seeming to want to see more clearly, but his mother was upset.

Mother (to Tim): "For God's sake, sit down, Tim."

Tim remained motionless. The car broke down suddenly, as if there were too many people blocking the way. At this time, the tire also cracked.

Father (to Jim): "Jim, get out of the car!"

Tim and his parents got out of the car and found that a Japanese tank pushed another car to their side, causing the tire to be destroyed.

Mother (to Father Season): "What shall we do?"

Father (to Ji's mother): "Go and see if you can get a boat. I'm sorry for your mother and son. Maxton is right."

Tim's father grabbed his mother's hand, and his mother grabbed Tim's hand and walked hard in the crowd. The crowd squeezed Tim's father. He released his mother's hand, and a pedestrian smashed Tim's father.

Father: "Don't hit me!"

The crowd continued to squeeze me forward, squeezing Tim's father away. Mother clutched Tim's hand tightly, and he was suddenly pushed away from his mother for a while.

Father (to Ji's mother): "Don't spread out, grab Tim's hand."

Mother (to Tim): "Dim, don't let them crowd."

Tim looked around and saw more Japanese "Zero" planes flying across the sky. Someone squeezed him so that the toy airplane in his hand was squeezed out.

Tim (to his mother anxiously): "My plane!"

After that, he threw off his mother's hand and leaned over to pick the plane, but when he was about to get up, the crowd squeezed away his mother. He hurried to pull his mother.

Tim: "Mom!"

It is a pity that the crowd scattered their mother and child. Tim hurriedly climbed onto the roof of a car and yelled in horror: "Mom, mom!"

Mother yelled in the crowd: "Jim, go home. I'll find you at home! I'll find you at home."

The mother disappeared in the crowd. A short while later, some Chinese residents appeared on the roof and shot at the Japanese. The Japanese fired back and Tim ran to cover, but the residents were still killed.

Frank: "Hello!"

Tim said nothing. Frank continued to speak to him.

Frank: "Child, are you all right!"

The Chinese beggar appeared from the small road and he found Frank; Frank yelled at him and the little beggar ran away.

Frank (to Tim): "How are you?"

Tim: "I'm fine!"

Frank: "Who are your parents? Where do you live?"

Tim: "13 Seymour Road. I was waiting for my parents and they were taken away."

Frank: "Take it away? What a cranky British child. What's your name?"

Is the vice president of the British Diaspora Association. Which British do you know? Do you know Louis and Mike of the Fuxifu Gang? Do you have a psychological feeling for bridge? With my method, if you need three squares, you just Yes. Your partner, if there are four "Ace", he tells you to type your "Ace", and then... Hey, I can't remember now... Frank (to Betsy): "Sorry, look at what I brought!"

Betsy (to Tim): "Come in!"

Tim stared at the rice.

Frank (to Betsy): "I don't know if he is hungry or crazy."

Betsy (to Tim): "It looks like you need to lie down for a while."

Tim continued to stare at the rice blankly.

Tim (to Betsy): "My father has a cotton mill in Pudong. He will absorb you."

Betsy smiled to Tim: "Absorb, this word is very beautiful."

Tim (to Betsy): "One time, he gave a taxi driver..."

Tim almost fell. Betsy helped him sit on a chair.

Betsy (to Tim): "Wait a minute. Your brain is not good." After all, he opened Tim's mouth and looked at his teeth.

Betsy (to Tim): "His tooth tray is not bad." Then he turned to Frank: "You have to spend a lot of money! You know now, someone doesn't care about his child's teeth!"

Frank gave Betsy some cigarettes.

Frank (to Betsy): "I'll give you three cigarettes. The goods in my hand, fuck, no one wants them. The Hongkou store costs ten dollars for a bag of rice."

Betsy inspected the emblem on Tim's school uniform.

Betsy (to Frank): "It's from Huatong Public School again."

Frank puzzled: "Training the priest?"

Betsy: "Huatong Public School, that was for the boss's son."

After Betsy said, he reached into Tim's pocket and drew out the comic strip.

Betsy (to Tim): "You must know a lot of important people! What do they call you?"

Tim: "One time, I saw Mrs. Sun Yat-sen Soong Ching Ling. She did not call me. I was only three and a half years old at that time."

Betsy (to Tim): "Mrs. Sun."

Tim: "I was introduced to her."

Betsy: "Recommendation."

Frank (to Betsy): "You two are waiting for the introduction. But now, as long as the Japanese come in. We have to eat mice."

Betsy: "The Japanese will not come. Cholera is everywhere in Nanshi, and they are very sensitive."

Frank: "The world is changing. Even if I sell these things. We can't travel along the river until it's in Chongqing. We have to tear down the'Queen Mary' ship."

Frank turned to look at Tim and found that he was still staring at the rice.

Frank (to Tim): "So, I don't have enough rice for you."

Betsy (to Frank): "Don't mess with the kids. These new words. What is this,'happy candy'?"

Betsy took a piece of alcoholic chocolate from Tim's pocket, put it in his mouth, and ate it.

Betsy (to Tim): "Boy, what's your name?"

Tim: "James. I'm called Tim or Timmy at home. I'm making a flying kite and I have written a book about bridge."

Betsy: "Jimi, I will call you Jimmy from now on. (To Frank) Jim's parents must have been arrested with other British people, and he is looking for them."

Betsy put the rice in two bowls. Both Tim and Frank watched his movements with greedy eyes. Betsy handed Tim a pot of rice, and Frank felt unhappy. Tim gobbled up a few mouthfuls of rice and then handed the pot to Frank.

Betsy (to Tim): "Leave Frank alone, he always eats after I have eaten it. (To Frank): Frank, right?"

Frank (to Betsy): "That's it, Betsy."

Betsy (to Tim): "That's because I think of all of us."

Tim continued to eat.

Betsy (to Tim): "Chew carefully. You should chew your meal six times, which is good."

Betsy ate by himself and looked at Tim thoughtfully.

Betsy turned to Frank: "We may be able to do something in this concentration camp. We are not busy leaving Shanghai."

After Tim had eaten the rice, he leaned back on his chair exhaustedly, and Frank took the vegetable bowl and ate the remaining rice in the bowl.

Betsy (to Tim): "You're tired, kid." (to Frank): "Where do I sleep?" (to Tim): "Shanghai Tim."

Frank (to Betsy): "Did you find gold teeth in his mouth?"

Betsy (to Frank): "Buy and sell, you know, Frank. Life."

30

daytime. Shanghai market.

Betsy is talking with a Chinese in Chinese, while fingering Tim.

Betsy (to Tim): "Sit down."

Tim sat down and Betsy pulled the back of his hand: "Puff up his muscles."

Tim bulged the muscles of his arms, but the Chinese man didn't seem to leave any impression. Tim and Frank left.

Tim (to Frank): "Why can't he sell me?"

Frank: "No one wants you, you are skinny and sick at any time."

31

daytime. Shanghai market.

Frank and Betsy walked back to the truck. Tim appeared uneasy.

Tim (to Betsy): "I will show you some valuable second-hand goods. Many houses have been emptied."

Betsy appeared very active.

Betsy (to Tim): "Is that so?"

Tim: "I can show you the house where I lived in the past."

Betsy left Tim and walked towards the truck. He leaned against the car door. Tim looked even more disturbed.

Tim (to Betsy): "Very luxurious!"

Betsy: "Luxury. It was lucky you were born there."

Tim: "Of course, life is not bad, eat well."

Betsy: "Life is superior!"

Betsy thought. Tim waited nervously.

Betsy: "Alright, let's go and see other houses."

Tim reluctantly got into the truck with Betsy.

Betsy (to Frank): "Let's go, Frank."

Betsy said to himself again: "Luxury and superior."

32

daytime. The streets of the British Concession.

Frank drove the truck fast down the street. Tim pointed the house to Betsy.

Tim: "This house has whiskey, gin and white piano. That house also has whiskey, gin..."

Frank (to Tim): "Which one?"

Tim (pointing to the one Frank mentioned): "A ballroom with a glass floor, a crystal chandelier!"

Betsy: "Crystal chandelier?"

Tim: "I think it's crystal."

Betsy: "I think you are tired."

Frank: "What about the money?"

Betsy (to Tim): "Yes, what about the money?"

Tim: "I have seen money. There are a large number of banknotes on the dressing table. I will take you there. Drive to the right."

The truck turned to Graham's house.

33

night. In front of Graham's house.

The truck drove slowly to the gate, they saw the houses in the park were brightly lit, and Tim saw a figure in front of the windows on the ground floor.

Tim: "I know my mother is back."

After all, push Frank away and get out of the car.

Frank: "Don't panic!"

Tim ran towards the house, and the figure ran from the dining room to the main room. Tim thought it was his mother, so he yelled.

Tim: "Mom!"

The figure opened the door. Only then did I discover that it was a Japanese who came to open the door, wearing a white Japanese kimono. Tim rushed to the Japanese, and the other Japanese came out of the room.

Frank and Betsy in the car felt uneasy.

Frank: "It's Japanese!"

Betsy: "I see, turn around and start."

Frank: "I didn't drive, there is no way back."

Betsy: "Then drive forward."

Frank drove hurriedly along the circular path, and the Japanese chased him.

Betsy: "Frank, God bless."

The Japanese chased the truck, pulled Frank and Betsy off the truck, and then beat them with a wooden stick. Betsy threw the glasses to Tim.

Betsy: "I will give it to you first."

Tim watched with disappointment as the Japanese continued to beat Betsy and Frank.

34

daytime. Concentration camp.

Tim was lying on a small bed. He fell asleep due to a high fever, sometimes talking nonsense, and the Lockwoods leaned over to watch him.

Tim (murmured): "The second engine is on fire. Please answer.'Red Dog', please answer, please answer, adjust the screw frame.'Red Dog'. The second engine is on fire, on fire..."

Lockwood sings softly for Jim, this is a Christmas song.

Lockwood: "The good king looks at Stephen's feast. It's snowing outside."

Tim wanted to see Lockwood's face clearly.

Mrs. Lockwood (to Tim): "You're just a little burnt, don't be afraid, we have all. Are you feeling better now?"

Hundreds of British people began to put their meals on the ground. The door opened and the Japanese soldiers entered, picking up buckets of potatoes.

35

daytime. Concentration camp. After a while.

Tim took the rice bowl and stood in line with the food. He received boiled potatoes and rice. When he had finished taking food and was leaving, a man bumped him and complained about him. The potatoes threw the food tray and rolled on the floor, and a little boy ran over and picked up the potatoes.

Tim (to the boy): "Very well, I can take a wash."

However, the little boy took the potatoes and ran away. Tim walked back to the group of food, but the Eurasian Mrs. Brackbonner, who was a cook, laughed at him in Chinese.

Tim: "I'm sorry. I made a mistake, it may be my fault."

Mrs. Brackbonner poured a spoonful of potato water on Tim's face. Tim staggered back a few steps. The head of the Japanese guard spoke to the captives in Japanese. A Japanese army is the translator.

Translation: "Attention! Transport the camp stuff and gather at the square. Line up, the first brigade arrives at the door. Truck No. 1."

Tim took the rice bowl and passed by the British Victor and his wife. Mr. Victor is handing a lunch box of potatoes to his wife. She stared at the potatoes in disgust.

Mrs. Victor (to husband): "You forgot the cutlery."

Mr. Victor: "But we don't have one!"

Tim walked to Betsy. Betsy was lying on a small bed, the scars on his face were still visible. Tim handed him a jar of water, and Betsy splashed it on the ground.

Betsy: "You can't drink the water in the bucket! Many people have died of dysentery. We can drink boiled water."

Betsy took out a bottle of boiling water and handed it to Tim.

Tim: "Boiling water? Thank you so much."

Betsy: "Nothing. You did a good job, I appreciate it. How did you eat?"

Betsy watched the other prisoners, and they began to line up to get food.

Betsy: "We have to line up. Watch out, it's the first one. Your father will agree."

Tim: "He will be satisfied with you. After the war, you should play a game of tennis."

Betsy: "Go there and ask Mrs. Petrich for potatoes."

Tim: "I think she is dead, Betsy."

Betsy: "Yes, she didn't have dinner. You go!"

Tim took three lunch boxes and ran away.

Betsy: "Don't forget to bow to the sergeant. We have to get out of here."

after a little while. Betsy and Tim walked between the prisoners.

Captive A (to Captive B): "The concentration camps are full. It's unlucky that we were taken and sent here."

Captive B: "The Japanese do not have enough concentration camps."

The two children, Paul and Ediz, sat on a bench and stared at their dead mother. Betsy walked over and hugged them by the shoulders.

Betsy: "Come on, boy, she's going to see God now."

At this time, Tim also walked towards a soldier. The soldier is dead, but he still has a lunch box in his hand. Tim hesitated for a while, then ran back to Betsy after taking the lunch box.

37

daytime. Concentration camp.

Betsy stood in front of Paul's mother's body and began to take off her shoes. Tim watched his behavior embarrassingly.

Tim: "What are you doing?"

Betsy: "Same size as yours."

Tim: "I don't want her shoes."

Betsy ignored Tim and continued to take off his shoes. Tim grabbed Betsy by the wrist.

Tim: "I don't want it. I don't want it."

Betsy: "You don't want it, others want it."

Tim tried to push Betsy away.

Tim: "Betsy, don't move her. I don't want her shoes. Don't move her. Don't take off her shoes."

Several prisoners heard Tim yelling loudly and looked at Betsy.

Tim: "I don't want her shoes!"

Betsy caught Tim and scolded him: "Don't yell!"

There was a whistle, and Tim looked shocked.

Tim: "It's a truck! It's a truck! Go away!"

Betsy stared at Tim in confusion.

Tim (to Betsy): "You didn't see it. Here is to see the dead."

Tim grabbed Paul and Ediz and ran away. Betsy followed them closely.

38

daytime. Concentration camp square.

The captives lined up. Sergeant Uchida checked one by one. There was a truck behind the prisoner. The Victors stood at the head of the row.

Mrs. Victor (to husband): "Tell them who we are and let us go out."

Mr. Victor: "Don't say anything, just stare at him."

Sergeant Uchida picked the captives into the truck. He selected several, including the Victors. Doctor Rollin stepped out of the team. Luo Lin: "I am a doctor. Let me go."

The sergeant chose Paul and Ediz. The two also got on the truck. Betsy and Tim walked to the top of the row. The sergeant selected Betsy, but walked past Tim and ignored him. Betsy got into the truck and ignored Tim. He was in the truck, sitting beside Paul and Ediz.

Betsy: "What's your name? Do you like magic? If you can make your sister Ediz laugh. I'll show you something."

Tim screamed hysterically and rushed to the truck.

Tim: "Betsy, don't leave me. Take me away! I can't stay here."

Betsy began to perform.

Tim: "I'll work for you! Take me away!"

Tim wants to climb into the truck. A Japanese soldier pulled him down, but Betsy didn't care about him.

Tim ran to the truck again. He saw the driver holding a map and talking to the Japanese army sergeant. The driver pointed at the map, looking confused. Tim ran to the driver and said to him.

Jim: "Suzhou? Are you going to Suzhou? It's northwest of Shanghai."

The driver nodded: "I have been to Suzhou several times. I know where it is."

Tim pointed forward, then jumped into the cab.

Tim: "It's that direction. My parents belong to the rural club. There! That direction, always. I have lived there for a long time. Thank you, sir, I know everywhere."

The Japanese sergeant asked him. Pushing him into the back of the truck, Tim got up from the truck floor. Ran forward and got on the roof. He shouted excitedly.

Jim: "Suzhou. Let's go to Suzhou!"

The truck started and drove along the road.

39

Gravel field. daytime.

The truck drove over the gravel yard. Betsy stared at the other captive Mr. Radek in the truck. Radek tied a pair of new golf shoes around his neck with laces.

Betsy (to Radek): "What a beautiful golf shoe."

Radek: "It was left to me by a good friend!"

Betsy is holding a pocket watch.

Betsy (to Radek): "Are you from a watch shop?"

Radek: "I'm sorry, I am not yours."

At this time, Tim was standing outside the truck door, pointing to the map, and speaking loudly.

Tim (to the driver): "Do you know where we are now?"

Tim pointed to the map and said to the driver.

Tim (to the driver): "We are here. We should turn left when we get here. Turn left when I tell you. Okay, turn left. When I say turn right, turn right again. You listen to me, otherwise we won't be able to get there. Suzhou, then you will be beaten to death."

Tim put the map out in front of the driver, and the driver spread out the map so as not to block his vision. At this time, Betsy motioned to Dr. Rollin to see Tim.

Betsy (to Rollin): "I am looking after him for his father."

Dr. Luo Lin answered Betsy suspiciously.

Luo Lin: "Are you an American?"

Betsy: "Not at all. I am an underground member of the Kuomintang."

Luo Lin (including mocking): "Is it a magician?"

40

Suzhou Airport. daytime.

The truck approached the airport. Luo Lin looked forward.

Luo Lin (to the prisoner): "There is the camp. It's next to the airport."

Betsy (to Luo Lin): "I didn't find any gathering place."

Luo Lin (to Betsy): "It's there, see? The wooden house in the distance."

The truck was parked by the road pillar that said "Stop Forward", and many Chinese farmers were moving rocks to build a command tower. The airport was huge, and the British prisoners climbed down from the truck, and a Japanese soldier put a stone in Radek's arms.

Radek (to the Japanese army): "What do I do with stones?"

Another captive Mrs. Huge got off the truck.

Hu Ge: "They want us to move rocks."

She tried to attract the attention of the Japanese guards.

Huge: "I'm sorry, there is a sick old man in the truck."

The Japanese guards ignored Mrs. Hugh. Another Japanese guard handed a stone to Luo Lin. The doctor threw a stone on the ground.

Luo Lin: "No."

The guard hit Luo Lin with the butt of the rifle, and Luo Lin was knocked to the ground. Betsy hurriedly lifted a rock.

Betsy: "Where? Where?"

The guard refers to the control tower. Betsy moved away with the stone. Tim watched him. Then walked to Dr. Luo Lin's side, trying to help him.

Luo Lin (to Tim): "I'm fine!"

Tim no longer cared about Rollin, he lifted a rock beside him and ran towards Betsy. Dr. Luo Lin looked disgusted.

Suzhou Airport is under busy construction and expansion.

41

daytime. Suzhou Airport is also a concentration camp.

Tim looked at the airport, then came to a row of Zero fighters. He approached an airplane, touched this and that, first the wing and then the engine. When the concentration camp commander Nagata spotted Tim, he shouted in Japanese and raised his gun at Tim.

Three Japanese pilots approached the plane and found Tim. Tim turned around and saluted them. They also saluted. Japanese commander Nagata immediately put down his rifle when he saw it.

42

Three years later. daytime. Suzhou Airport is also a concentration camp.

Tim was wearing a leather flight suit and appeared to be severely malnourished. He watched a Japanese child running on the airport runway, and then released his model airplane. The model flew over the wire fence and landed not far from Tim's side. Tim picked up the plane and returned it to the Japanese children. The Japanese child smiled and thanked him in Japanese.

43

Since heaven. Suzhou concentration camp.

Tim was running in the concentration camp, and he stopped in front of a British prisoner. This British prisoner Qian is in charge of the vegetable plot in the concentration camp. Tim took out a few cigarettes in exchange for a small cabbage and two tomatoes, and then ran away from the vegetable garden. At this time, a few golfers passed by, among them Mr. Maxton.

Tim (to the golfer): "Hit with your pointed club."

Golfer (to others): "Slick!"

Second golfer: "Go where you should go!"

Maxton (to Tim): "You will be excluded from the group."

(Subtitle) Suzhou Creek. International concentration camp. 1945.

Tim ran to the laundry room. He took Betsy's sock and handed it to Paula the washerwoman, and at the same time gave her a cabbage.

Paula: "This cabbage is good. Thank you."

Tim ran out of the laundry room and saw a boy wiping boots for the Japanese. Tim stopped and gave him a piece of gum in exchange for Nagata’s boots. Then he ran away again. He ran past a group of prisoners. They are rehearsing "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Women (reading Shakespeare's lines): "This part is my fault..."

Director (reading lines): "Okay, Helena, listen to my apology."

Tim gave the boots to Nagata, who was taking a bath in a tub. Tim quietly picked up a bar of soap and ran away. He came to a group of children. The children are playing with pebbles on a piece of broken iron. Tim moved the stone aside, took it and ran away. The children scolded him loudly.

Girl: "It's not pretty, give us the stones back! We have to play!"

44

daytime. Concentration camp hospital.

Tim ran into the hospital. Dr. Luo Lin is working.

Tim (to Rollin): "Doctor Rollin. I have homework."

Tim found that Dr. Rollin was standing in front of a woman who looked like a dead woman, doing a heart massage. Dr. Rollin turned to Tim: "Can you do this?"

Tim stood at the position of Dr. Luo Lin and pressed his hands on the young woman's chest.

Luo Lin: "Don't be too fast, master the rhythm."

The young woman did not respond. Nurse Mrs. Philip looked at Dr. Rollin.

Mrs. Philip: "She's done."

Dr. Luo Lin lit a match and approached the young woman's eyes. Without any response, he moved the match away. Tim continued to press his chest, and suddenly, the woman's eyes turned towards him, and he appeared panicked.

Tim (to Rollin): "She... she looked at me. She looked at me just now. I did it. I saved her. I can do it. Look at her eyes!"

Tim continued to press the woman's chest up and down. An English woman in the next bed is watching.

British woman (to Rowling): "She thinks she died as early as when she was in England."

Dr. Rollin pulled Tim away.

Luo Lin: "Don't press it, you just poured blood into her brain, now wait a minute, Tim."

After that, he ordered Mrs. Philip again.

Rowling (to Mrs. Philip): "Give Radek the mosquito net."

Mrs. Philip: "This poor man."

Luo Lin: "Just give it to him!"

Mrs. Philip and another nurse removed the mosquito nets from the women's bed and hung them on the bed of the dead Radek. Radek’s golf shoes were placed beside the bed.

Tim and Dr. Rollin sat at the table.

Tim (to Rollin): "That means, whoever dies next has a mosquito net, right?"

Dr. Rollin ignored Tim and opened his book.

Luo Lin read: "I will be loved by others."

Tim answered in Latin.

Tim: "He's like a defeated battle."

Luo Lin: "They got love."

Tim answered again in Latin.

Tim: "He's dead, can I get these shoes?"

Luo Lin: "God, you are really a pragmatist, you will be loved by others."

Luo Lin continued solemnly: "We should fight them, these Japanese. This is how we can beat them without dying."

Tim: "The war is over, so what?"

Luo Lin: "Are you willing to end the war?"

Tim: "Of course, but if we stay in the camp, the Japanese will look after us."

Luo Lin: "We will become their burden, and they will no longer provide us with food."

Tim: "If the Americans land, the Japanese will resist."

Luo Lin: "Do you admire Japanese?"

Tim: "They are very brave!"

Luo Lin: "Is it so important?"

Tim: "If you want to win the war."

Luo Lin: "But we don't want them to win."

Tim: "I know."

Luo Lin: "Remember, we are British."

Tim: "I have never been to the UK."

After speaking, I took a bottle of medicine and inspected it.

Luo Lin: "Let it go."

Tim quietly twisted the cork and put it back in place.

Luo Lin: "Tomorrow, take Latin. Your English class, think about it, we are in a concentration camp."

Tim (reciting): "We never grasp tomorrow. There is no guarantee of happiness. Today is dead, it is tomorrow, time stops in the bait of people, love is in front of us..."

Luo Lin: "This is a poem, not a combination of words."

Another female nurse, Mrs. Gilmo, called Dr. Luo Lin.

Mrs. Gilmo: "Doctor Luo, come and see Radek."

Tim took out two tomatoes and played with them.

Luo Lin: "Take it from the garden?"

Tim: "I gave it to Betsy."

Luo Lin: "You are Betsy's friend, aren't you? He is now a guard."

Tim: "That's because he drinks boiled water."

Luo Lin: "Forget it. You wait to monitor others."

Tim ran out of the hospital.

Mrs. Philip (to Dr. Rollin): "Look, he is always so busy! Isn't he?"

45

daytime. Suzhou concentration camp.

Tim ran past Maxton, and he pointed to a group of Japanese soldiers approaching the captive food.

Maxton (to Tim): "Here comes the feeding."

Tim: "I'll go."

Maxton: "I don't want to taste your things."

Tim stopped, picked up Betsy's clothes, and ran towards the American residence.

46

daytime. American residence.

Tim ran to the back of the crowded residence, where Betsy's "turf" was located. Tim stood in front of the curtain, and Frank stood there, blocking his way.

Frank: "You go out, kid."

Behind the curtain, Betsy was talking to two Americans, Tandy and Tibtree.

Betsy (to Tanti): "The Japanese may have planted explosives."

Frank: "Yes, boss, here comes the kid."

Frank let Tim pass.

Tandy (to Tim): "Do you want chocolate?"

Tim: "Yes!"

Tandy (humorously): "Me too. Do you have one?"

Tandy smiled. Frank expressed dissatisfaction with Tim, and Tim panted.

Frank: "Don't breathe loudly. There is not enough air here!"

Betsy: "In China, there is not enough air for people."

Tim gave the clothes to Betsy.

Tim: "This is your dress!"

Betsy: "It sucks better than the Shanghai laundry. Do you have a cork?"

Tim gave Betsy the cork.

Tim: "I got one."

Betsy: "Good boy. Good job."

Tim flips through Betsy's "Life" magazine.

Tim: "What year is this?"

Betsy: "In 1945."

Tim: "How did you get it?"

Betsy: "I ordered it. I have a'Pike' car and snacks from America!"

Betsy said to show Tim an ad.

Betsy: "Can you find the sewing needle for me?"

Tim: "I will try."

Betsy stared at Frank.

Betsy: "You go out."

Frank walked away quickly.

Betsy (to Tim): "Yes, you are almost ours. Did you see the Mustang destroyer yesterday?"

Tim: "This is a luxury car in the sky."

Betsy: "Yes, there will be a large number of B-29 bombers soon. This is an aerial fortress, and it is also called a defensive weapon. It flew from Okinawa and Tokyo is already within the bombing range. I should think of going home. Time is up."

Tim: "Leave the camp."

Betsy: "One group wants to give you food, another group wants to kill you, and then turn around."

Tim: "What time is it?"

Betsy told him the time.

Tim: "Yes?"

Betsy: "It counts!"

Tim: "If we lived here, everything would be easy."

Betsy: "When Vikdorf returns to you, he will go back to the British residence."

Tim:'They have bothered me. But the British residence is too cold. Can I live in? "

Betsy: "Thanksgiving is here. I have pheasants."

Tim felt excited. Betsy took out a metal lasso.

Betsy: "I just made a lasso, it works, and stretch my arm."

Tim stretched out his arm. Betsy slipped the lasso into his arm and pulled it tightly.

Betsy: "Look, it works!"

Tim: "I haven't seen a pheasant!"

Betsy: "I have, outside the barbed wire."

Tim: "What barbed wire."

Betsy: ""Of course it's around us! "

Tim: "Can you go out?"

Betsy: "On the edge of the airport, cross the river. Whoever does it will get a reward. Your friend Schweiber, in other words, how about that doctor?"

Tim: "I saved his patient Amy to life."

Betsy gave Tim a magazine.

Betsy: "This is a valuable Reader's Digest. I'm improving your literary ability."

Tim: "I learned a new word today: pragmatist."

Betsy: "Good wording!"

Tim: "If I set a trap, can I still live here?"

Betsy: "I think about it."

Tim: "When the time comes, you will take me there!"

Betsy: "Honestly, you and Tandy have equal chances."

Tim: "Take me!"

Betsy: "Tell me, why should I take you there!"

Tim: "I am your friend!"

Frank turned to the curtain.

Frank (to Betsy): "The truck is here."

Tim: "Mr. Maxton occupies my seat!"

47

Daytime^ Suzhou Concentration Camp.

The captives gathered at the door of the kitchen. A Japanese soldier was putting potatoes in a pot with grain and boiling water, and several prisoners protested angrily.

Bearded captive: "They reduced our supply. Fuck."

Tim walked by Maxton, who was pushing his little scooter into the crowd.

Tim: "Mr. Maxton, I'll get it for you."

Maxton: "You really look like your father."

Mr. Victor and the frail Mrs. Victor walked to the kitchen. Mr. Victor helped his wife get on the shelf cart.

Mr. Victor (to wife): "I'll get food."

The bearded prisoner still shouted at the Japanese soldiers angrily: "You have cut the quota by half."

The captives pushed and shoved the Japanese soldiers, and the Japanese soldiers banged the side of the pot angrily, shaking out the potatoes. Several prisoners, including Tim, quietly stopped to pick up potatoes. After Tim took three potatoes, he ran out of the team and came to Mr. Maxton.

Tim: "Mr. Maxton, I got yours."

48

daytime. Concentration camp family residence.

A man took a few potatoes, ran into the house, and handed them to his wife and children.

Man: "I have a few."

Tim enters.

Tim: "Hello!"

Tim entered his own little world, which was a corner separated from the slightly larger residence of the Victors. After Tim entered, he put a potato into an iron box and put it in his suitcase, and then sat on his bed and ate, watching Mrs. Victor sitting on the bed and shining himself with a small mirror. His face was melancholy. Mr. Victor entered and sat beside her.

Mr. Victor: "Our rations have dropped again. They are just beasts."

At this time, Tim used a spoon to pick out many bugs from the potatoes, and he counted them.

Tim: "83...84... (to Mr. Victor) Mr. Victor, today is 87."

As he said, he wrote the numbers on the higher board.

Tim (to Mr. Victor): "Exceeded the average, but the overall trend is down."

Mrs. Victor: "Should you... Tim?"

Tim (to Mrs. Victor): "I'm sorry. Dr. Rollin said that if we are not saved, we will die in two days, so eat whatever you have."

Mrs. Victor: "After the war, you will miss this concentration camp."

Tim: "Really? But if everyone else leaves the camp, I will find my parents. I will tell them that you have taken care of me."

Mrs. Victor (coldly): "Can I get a reward?"

Tim: "What reward do you want?"

Mrs. Victor: "You tell everyone!"

Tim: "I was still young at the time. Why did the Japanese close schools?"

Mrs. Victor: "They want to punish adults. I don't know how do you go to school after the war?"

Tim: "I will be very strange. The best teacher at the moment is the university of life."

Mr. Victor (to Tim): "My God!"

Mrs. Victor (to Tim): "Can we eat?"

Tim (to Mrs. Victor): "But we have to eat these bugs."

Mrs. Victor: "I know. Dr. Rollin told you."

Tim: "Because there is protein in the worm."

Mrs. Victor: "Doctor Rollin is right, we should eat these bugs."

Tim: "Do you believe in vitamins?"

Mrs. Victor was surprised.

Mrs. Victor: "What a weird kid. Maybe it's time for you to enter the single room. You are no longer 12 years old."

49

night. Tim's small world in the family residence.

Tim was lying on the bed. He saw through the hole in the ragged clothes that the Victors had fallen asleep. Outdoors, US planes bombed some places, lighting up the sky. Tim opened the window.

Tim: "The Americans are already over the South City again."

Tim turned to the Victors. The two of them began to intimacy. Mr. Vic found Tim was peeking. Tim quickly pointed to the sky and said.

Tim: "The plane is bombing the dock in Shanghai."

Get out of bed and quickly ran out of the room.

50

night. Outside the family residence.

Tim rushed out the door. At this time a B-29 bomber flew over.

Suddenly, a bomb exploded only a hundred meters away from the concentration camp. Betsy and other Americans all came to the window to watch.

Betsy (to everyone): "They all fly from the Cornell Islands, like playing a game."

Cohen (asked to Betsy): "What did you say?"

Betsy: "This way the B-29 can reduce weight."

Tieboutri (to Betsy): "Both are 200 pounds."

Cohen (to Betsy): "It's very close."

Dandy (to Cohen): "It's too close to Nagata."

Tieboutri: "We don't like that stuff."

51

night. Outside the concentration camp hospital.

Dr. Rowling and Mrs. Philip stood at the entrance of the hospital. The Japanese guards ran from one camp to another, smashing the windows.

Mrs. Philip: "What does this mean?"

Dr. Luo Lin: "Excuse me from the bombing of American planes! Keep the patients away from the windows."

Nagata and a few Japanese soldiers approached the hospital. Nagata holds a wooden stick. He stood at the gate and began to smash the glass with a wooden stick. Doctor Luo Lin held the stick, glared at Nagata, and then threw the stick away. Nagata beat Dr. Luo Lin with a wooden stick until he fell to the ground. Tim ran hurriedly and stood behind Nagata.

Tim: "Sergeant Nagata!"

Nagata stopped beating Dr. Rollin and turned to Tim. Tim grabbed a stool, smashed the glass, and then ran in front of Nagata and spoke to him in Japanese. Nagata thought for a while, put down the stick, left the gate, and walked towards the crowd. Dr. Rowling struggled to stand up, entered the hospital, and then appeared again, handing a pair of Dirac's golf shoes to Tim, who looked very happy.

52

night. Outside the vegetable garden.

A group of farmers entered the vegetable garden, grabbing vegetables and fruits. The British captives who were in charge of the vegetable garden ran towards them.

British captive: "Get out! This belongs to the British, don't move. Go away. Guards!"

The farmers rushed towards the barbed wire with food, and the Japanese guards began to shoot with machine guns on the watchtower. At this time, Betsy and other Americans were watching at their residence. Several farmers were hit. An explosion appeared beside a Nongliang, throwing him into the air. But Di was startled.

Dandy (to Betsy): "A landmine! I told you it was a landmine."

Betsy: "Someone threw a grenade."

53

daytime. The residence of the American captives.

When Betsy, Dandy and the other captives watched carefully by the window, Tim, holding some chopping wood, walked towards the barbed wire fence.

Dandy (to Betsy): "Betsy, I'll charge him to touch a landmine."

Betsy (to Dandy): "I bet that he can pass through the barbed wire without mines."

Butte: "You bet."

54

daytime. Suzhou concentration camp.

Tim is wearing new golf shoes, standing in front of the barbed wire, and putting down the wood. He looked up at the guard on the observation platform, who was standing sleepily on the platform of the observation platform. Tim took out the wire hook used to catch the pheasant and knelt beside the wire fence. The Americans continued to observe at the window.

Tieboutri (to everyone): "So far, everything goes well."

Tim moved his golf shoes, crawled slowly under the wire fence, and then entered the creek. He pushed away the thick weeds. At the same time, Nagata awakened the sleepy guard and told him to shoot. Nagata looked around nervously.

Tieboutri (to everyone): "He found something."

Betsy said to Tieboutri: "Tiem is a disaster star."

Nagata walked to the wire fence and saw Tim's golf shoes. He raised his gun.

Tieboutri (to Betsy): "This is an unlucky man, Betsy. I will give you the harmonica and exchange my next meal for your pocket watch."

Betsy: "I bet with you."

Other Americans started placing bets. Nagata held his spear, stood over the barbed wire, and started to descend the creek. Tim, who was not too far away, shrank away. The Americans continued to place their bets.

Tieboutri: "I doubled my bet. I bet on both of my next meals."

Betsy (to Tieboutri): "You should lose weight."

Butty (to Betsy): "What are you betting on, Betsy?"

Betsy took out his "Life" magazine.

Betsy: "My "Life" magazine."

Butte: "Who is the cover?"

Captive A (to Betsy): "Two packs of cigarettes hold the child."

Second captive: "My sunglasses are on Nagata."

At this time, Nagata continued to push away the weeds, looking for Tim; Tim was frozen in the grass.

Prisoner B (just like Otagata): "Nagata, do it hard."

When Nagata was only one foot away from Tim, the Japanese boy suddenly appeared on the airport and shouted to Nagata.

Nagata turned to stare at the Japanese boy, who continued to yell and wave his hand. Nagata walked to the Japanese boy. He just stepped across Tim's body. Tim hastily retreated into the quagmire. Nagata picked up the model glider that the Japanese boy had fallen on the weeds and threw it back to the boy. Then walked towards the concentration camp.

After he left, Tim, with a muddy face, looked at the Japanese boy. The Japanese boy saw that it was Tim, and smiled and greeted him. Betsy began to collect the bets he won, and the American captives looked very frustrated.

Captive First (to Betsy): "The kid is lucky."

Prisoner Qianyi: "I lost a lot."

55

daytime. Suzhou concentration camp.

Tim, who was still full of mud, walked out of the residence with his things.

He walked past a little girl, Nina.

Tim (to Nino): "Do you want chocolate?"

Nina: "Yes!"

Tim: "I want it too, do you have one?"

Nina felt puzzled, and Tim happily walked to the American residence.

56

daytime. Meimenren residence.

Tim comes in. The Americans all stood up and saluted him as he passed by. Betsy led Tim to a bunk, and Frank was moving away from there angrily.

Betsy: "Don't let me down. You are an American now."

Tim sat down in his bunk. Turn around to see Frank. Frank is watching him in the new bunk.

Tim (in American accent): "Hi, Frank, hello!"

Frank rolled aside. Tim showed triumph in his bunk lying down.

57

daytime. airport.

Tim looked at the airport. A group of Japanese officers are training the Japanese child to control him on a simulator.

58

daytime. American residence.

Tim enters Betsy's little world. Frank is shaving Betsy, but Die, Tieboutri and Betsy are looking at the map together.

Butty (to Betsy): "The small river should be east. You can steal a sampan and paddle it toward the middle or east, but you may encounter other rivers or rice fields."

Tim: "Where did you get this map?"

Betsy turned his face to Tim.

Tim picked up the compass. It was actually made by Betsy using a cork and a needle on a bowl of water.

Tim (to Betsy): "You did it? This compass works."

Betsy: "Let me down."

Tim put down the bowl. But Di turned to look at the map again. Tim asked Betsy nervously.

Tim: "Can this indicate the time?"

Betsy: "I can tell you what time it is."

Tim: "Don't forget."

Betsy: "Never."

Betsy touched his shaved face.

Betsy (to everyone): "I'm feeding almost everyone."

Tim: "Without me, you would have no compass."

Betsy: "No. I just don't have a needle. Without me, there would be no compass."

Butte: "It's better to cross the river."

Bill stood at the window. He saw Nagata approaching, so he whistled and sounded the alarm.

Bill: "Nagata!"

The Americans quickly dispersed, put away the compass, hid the map, and put away the shave tools.

Betsy (to Tim): "Draw the curtains quickly."

Tim closed the curtain and stood outside. Nagata and his entourage enter the residence. When the American saw him approaching, he was a little nervous. Nagata drew the curtain, and Tiboutry, Betsy, and Dandi were sitting at a small table, playing cards. They stared at Nagata nonchalantly. Nagata looked at them suspiciously. He pushed aside the sign and found that there was a razor on the floor, so he walked up to Betsy and slapped him. Nagata dropped the razor. Betsy leaned over to pick it up, and Nagata kicked him in the face with his knee. The Americans shouted in protest, but Nagata beat him again. Tim rushed to Nagata and begged him in Japanese. But Nagata pushed him out of the room, and then began beating Betsy again, pushing him down on the sleeping bunk. Betsy looked at Tim.

Betsy: "Dim, come!"

Tim walked to the sleeping bunk.

Betsy: "You take care of my things."

Nagata pulled Betsy out of the sleeping bunk and beat him constantly.

59

night. Concentration camp hospital.

Tim walked to Betsy lying on a bed with a tent. Betsy woke up and saw Tim.

Betsy: "Did you see this mosquito net? See it? What does this mean, do you understand? Dr. Luo Lin has work."

Tim: "Betsy, you are amazing."

Betsy: "It only took me two days to install the pool."

Tim: "How do you feel?"
