rules, breaking rules

The two most frequently heard words in the film are "rules", beating feet is a rule, lighting a lamp is a rule, eating together is a rule, and it is a rule handed down from our ancestors. The rules are not allowed to be broken, and the arrival of Songlian is to break the rules. It requires the meal to be brought into the house to eat, and the last scene is also the most exciting scene in the whole play. She lights up The third wife and the lights in her own house are all defying the rules.
We saw that the original Songlian was also influenced by foreign objects. She would be jealous when the lights in the courtyard were lit, and she would be angry when the table didn't have spinach tofu that she liked, and the third wife ordered meat dishes (although I didn't quite understand why she asked, and felt silly Yes, maybe she is fighting for her rights, because she likes tofu with spinach.), and she will be tempted by the sound of foot thumping. But in the end, she came to her senses. After being blocked, she thought about two questions, one was when she was calculating, others were calculating her, and the other was what is a (woman) person in this yard.
I watched this movie today because I watched "The Wives and Concubines". After reading the novel, it is really uncomfortable to watch the movie. The logic of the plot in the book is still clearly remembered in my mind, but I have to accept the plot and logic of the movie. , sometimes there are conflicts and sometimes there are comparisons.
What the movie does better is to give a reasonable source for several of the plots in the book. Yan'er, who hopes to be a wife one day, even thinks that Song Lian has robbed her of his wife's position, so she has always been disdainful of Song Lian. The second is that Zhuo Yun took the initiative to ask Song Lian to cut the students' heads, showing off that Master Chen spent the night at her place, and adding a puppet, which caused Song Lian's great anger. Third, Song Lian confided that the third wife went to see Dr. Gao after drinking, but the second wife took it down. This episode also deepened Song Lian's later guilt for the death of the third wife.
In the movie, Mr. Chen does not have a positive picture, and more of his lines in the book are handed over to the housekeeper (leading the fourth wife to visit the ladies) and Cai Po ("Rui Xue Zhao Feng Nian") in the movie. This is not to say that he It doesn't matter, because we still see Mr. Chen's invisible influence through the lantern. This seems to be a generalization of the image of an individual. Any head of a wealthy feudal landlord family can have a group of wives and concubines like Master Chen, and like him, affect the status of women in the family with personal emotions.
Let's talk about the image of Song Lian, the Song Lian in the book, according to her own words, is "orphan", she does not necessarily look down on many things, and at the same time she is very smart and clearly understands her situation. She won't show weakness in the crowd, and she's not the kind of person who will be preoccupied with competing for favor. It is precisely because of this character that she will not allow the subordinate Yan'er to look down on her and commit the following crimes; similarly, she will not allow Zhuo Yun to be cruel to her. In the book, she and the third wife, Mei Shan, are the same people. It is as if the third wife said that the people in the well are her and Songlian. So I don't think she's the one who revealed what happened to Mei Shan and Dr. Gao in the book. In the book Song Lian and the Dead Man's Well, Song Lian's thoughts about the well and her dead concubine are the source of later changes in her thinking, and she is afraid that she will also be thrown into the well. In the book, the object of her admiration is Feipu, and Chen Zuoqian is getting older and older. Feipu couldn't give her a future, the tragic ending of the third wife, and the long-term depression in her heart led to her last madness. At the beginning of the movie, Song Lian walks to Chen's house and asks Yan'er to carry her the suitcase. I think the arrangement is very good, which reflects Song Lian's loneliness and her self-esteem, and many of the later episodes arrange her a little bit. Stupid, jealous on the open face, aroused the dissatisfaction of other wives, and Master Chen, and finally couldn't hold back, and came up with a fake pregnancy trick, which finally angered Master Chen and blocked the lights. In the film, Songlian's madness is due to guilt and seeing the murder scene (I think it's a bit far-fetched), but the reason for the madness in the book is different, and I think the madness in the book is more reasonable, and its internal cause is more depressing.
In the end, I think the book may be smaller and reflect the story of a family, while the film has a larger scope and reflects the entire feudal family.

Raise the Red Lantern quotes

  • The Third Concubine: Good or bad, it's all playacting. If you act well, you can fool other people; if you do it badly, you can only fool yourself, and when you can't even fool yourself, you just can fool the ghosts.

  • Yan'er: Who are you?

Housekeeper: Fourth mistress, please come inside.

Yan'er: [losing her cool] So you're the fourth mistress!

[Yan'er rudely pulls the water bowl away from Songlian and puts clothes in it]

Songlian: Yes! I am the fourth mistress. Bring my suitcase inside please.
