The setting of the human brain in this film is probably similar to that of a computer, with hardware and an operating system. One day people found a way to install a new operating system, but you have to control the bootloader\cmos\bios with drugs, or you will accidentally enter the original operating system one day. After installing the new system, the first preparation for the new system is to detect the hardware and load the driver, which is why Ed has to constantly adapt to the new body through exercise in the first place.
