One summer, 14-year-old Duncan (played by Liam James) went to Trent's seaside cottage for vacation with his mother Pam, his mother's boyfriend Trent and Trent's daughter. Like most children from divorced families, Duncan doesn't like his mom's boyfriend. Duncan finds himself at odds with Trent's friends, and his already taciturn nature becomes even more unhappy. Until he met Owen (Sam Rockwell) on a bicycle outing. Owen is a staff member of the local water park. Under Owen's introduction, Duncan became a part-time employee of the water park. There, he met new friends, spent a happy time, and got closer to Susanna (Anna Sophia Robb), a neighbor girl who also suffers from family problems. One night, Duncan discovers Trent's secret, and his conflict with his family deepens...

Owen: What's going on?
Duncan: I hate him.
Owen: Who?
Duncan: Trent. My mom's boyfriend. He said I was a three. He asked me what I thought I was on, a scale from one to ten. He called me a three. Who says that to somebody?
