Belief

It is probably the most talked about movie by Laota, and the arrangement of the scenes is very similar to watching a joint drama.

A few thoughts:

Do stalkers truly believe in the power of the room, or for their own livelihood? Are stalkers true idealists, or self-serving speculators? Personally, I prefer to see him as the latter. At the beginning of the film, when he led the writer and the professor into the area, the stalker was undoubtedly very authoritative, and he had command over the behavior of the writer and the professor; The control is not as good as before, so that the author who was selected in the end refused to enter the room, and when the professor took out the bomb and wanted to destroy the room, the stalker pleaded in a low voice, and even said who can I bring here in the future? You don't believe him, I have no other ability. I'm a tiny person, and I can't find things that prove my worth other than concentration. It's like a pseudo-god who grew stronger by relying on the power of the believers, and became nothing after losing the power of belief.

Professors and writers are people who don't think they are happy, so although they don't believe it, they still follow the stalker to the area, subconsciously wanting to get something they don't think exists, of course they don't get it; and the stalker's wife, From the monologue at the end of the film, it seems that although she has various difficulties in her life with the stalker, her wife is very happy, and she even thinks she is happy. That is, those who go to the area do not get it, and those who do not go are self-sufficient. The stalker refused his wife's request to go to the area (in fact, it was more casual), and his reasons were vague and untenable. So the stalker is an illusion that hopes to at least preserve the power of the room in front of his wife.

The performance is very skillful, but because the quality of the film is really bad, many shots passed by without being able to see clearly. Sadness.

Digression: Whether it's the background, the shots, or the dialogue between the characters, it all reminds me of Red Desert. The latter is more of a labyrinth without a head.

In the poetic long shot of the old pagoda, the viewer's eyes are firmly locked by the camera. The inner desire, the scientist trying to blow up the forbidden area and finally giving up, the stalker representing the religion is suffering because it cannot bring happiness to people. That void of space comes from our desire, and mind-controlled drinking glass is the explanation for it all.

Beginning with hope in despair, can you imagine it from a political point of view, stalker writers and scientists are their same generation, witnessing the possibility of an ideal country, but in the end it is just an unattainable imagination, standing in front of the room, Or it’s just an illusion at all. Even if the wish cannot be achieved, when the deep desire is discovered, there is no courage to face it. Soon, the Ta family finally left the motherland, and finally Soviet-style communism ended..

Stalker quotes

  • Stalker's Wife: You know, Mama was very opposed to it. You've probably already guessed, that he's one of God's fools. Everyone around here used to laugh at him. He was such a wretched muddler. Mama used to say: "he's a stalker, a marked man, an eternal jailbird. Remember the kind of children stalkers have." I didn't even argue. I knew all about it, that he was a marked man, a jailbird. I knew about the kids. Only what could I do? I was sure I'd be happy with him. I knew there'd be a lot of sorrow, but I'd rather know bitter-sweet happiness, than a grey, uneventful life. Perhaps I invented all this later. But when he come up to me and said: "Come with me", I went. And I've never regretted it. Never. There was a lot of grief, and fear, and pain, but I've never regretted it, nor envied anyone. It's just fate. It's life, it's us. And if there were no sorrow in our lives, it wouldn't be better, it would be worse. Because then there'd be no happiness, either. And there'd be no hope.
