In a small Irish town, everyone believes in Catholicism, and the folk customs are very conservative. There is a local tradition that you cannot marry outsiders. Beth, a neurotic young girl, was sent to a mental hospital by her mother because she could not control her emotions because of the death of her brother. Beth is madly in love with an out-of-towner who works in the oil field, Yard, and Yard loves her too. Despite the objections of her family and people in the town, Beth married the out-of-towner Yard without hesitation, even though the church wouldn't ring the bell for their wedding. At the wedding, Beth received a sincere blessing from her sister-in-law, who had been with her since her brother's death.
Newly married Yan Er, Yard opened up Beth's erotic world, turning her from an ignorant girl who knew nothing about men to a happy woman wrapped in sweetness. But happiness is always short-lived. After a turbulent honeymoon period, Yard had to return to the working tanker to continue working. Beth was suffering day after day waiting, praying every day that Yade would come back soon. God seems to hear Beth's prayer, but when Yard does return to her as she wishes, she finds herself guilty of an unforgivable sin that she has no time to regret.
Yard had an accident at work and was sent back to the town. After the hospital tried his best to rescue him, Yade finally saved his life, but he became a paralyzed man, and his condition was getting worse. Beth felt that Yard's misfortune was entirely caused by herself, and she went to church every day to confess to God. And Yade, who is incapacitated, looks at his beautiful wife every day, but can't touch her and caress her like before, which makes Yade feel unbearable. As a man who can't have sex with the woman he loves, Yard feels like a zombie who can't experience the texture of life at all. So Yard asked Beth to have sex with other men, and through the sexual stimulation of her and a strange man, she re-experienced the pleasure of sex and stimulated her will to survive.
At first Beth refused, but Yade's condition suddenly deteriorated, so she forced herself to hook up with a man, and Yade's condition actually improved. So Beth begins to believe in exchanging her sexual stimulation with other men for Yard's improvement and his eventual recovery. For Yade, she put down her female dignity and even disregarded her life, and went to bed with all kinds of men. Beth's apparent debauchery is shamed by the town, and even her own mother shuts her out. Emotional Beth has gone mad and is sent to a mental hospital. Beth escaped from the mental hospital, went to prostitution on the infamous pirate ship, and exchanged one orgasm for the miracle of Yard. The sacrifice of love ultimately pushes Beth into the abyss of mental breakdown and ultimately destroys her.
Beth is dead. Yad stood up. The bells from heaven finally rang.
