Because you love someone, you fall in love with a foreign land.

For work reasons, after staying in Sahara for more than half a year, I clicked on the title of the film.
The endless desert in the movie and the slowly moving camel team. Outside the screen, you can feel the harshness of nature, but Bell's fortitude, wit, courage and sincerity are more vividly revealed. The story spans Britain, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt... The differences between the Middle East and Western civilizations are constantly colliding and blending in the details of clothing, home furnishing, food, and even speech and behavior, but each has its own meaning. In Bell's life, the two male diplomats who are unlovable and unattainable are equally crazy about love and gentle as water, but their personalities are completely different. The diary filled with sandstorms and blood and tears that ran through the film and throughout Bell's life forever retained that passionate time and became a distant bright star in the Arabian night sky.

A woman walking into the desert with dreams of love and freedom sounds familiar.

The packaging is ok, the scenes/music/costumes are all good, everything else is mediocre. 3 stars

Queen of the Desert quotes

  • Charles Doughty-Wylie: Will you write to me?

Gertrude Bell: Yes, I'll write to you from every post office in the desert.

  • Gertrude Bell: [writing in her diary] Already I have dropped back into the desert as if it were my own place. Silence and solitude all around me like an impenetrable veil. Sleep more profound that civilization contrives. And then, the roadless desert, again.
