The "hanging lantern" in the film "The Big Red Lantern" and the "Dian Sedan" in "Red Sorghum" are from the same director, both directed by Zhang Yimou, and both belong to "fake folk customs". Very different. The latter, with its enthusiastic and unrestrained visual modeling and movement, freely and vividly praises the sacred ceremony of life-creating activities—marriage.
Different forms of marriage customs have a common feature: lively.
We don't care whether there is really the custom of "Dian Sedan", the atmosphere and emotion of "Dian Sedan" conform to the general characteristics of marriage customs, and we feel it is authentic and credible. For the former, there is nothing more to convey than to give us some visual form.
"Hanging the lamp" to show affection does not contain any conventional information, but is just a symbol given by the director. The symbol "hanging lamp" and the semantics of "showing favor" are separated from each other, and the possible and actual meanings between the two are completely incomprehensible and unrecognizable, so they appear false and redundant.
If you leave the real essence of life, no matter how realistic the picture is, it is difficult to have the aesthetic fidelity. Disease-free Shen Yin's mood is unlikely to give the audience a sense of identity and authenticity.
