"House of Sin": a short and powerful drama film

A short and powerful movie, adapted from a drama, a family is a stage, the table and chairs are the stage layout, the wall decorations are the stage background, and the gorgeous home hides sins.
This comes from "The Inspector's Visit", one of the three famous dramas in the West End of London. At the beginning of the film, it already shows tension. The daughter (Chloe Pirrie) tries on the dress in front of the mirror, and the mother (Miranda Pirrie) Miranda Richardson (played by Miranda Richardson) wears a fine pearl necklace around his neck, the servants are hurried, everyone is busy, and the first woman in a white lace dress with her back to her flashes past, with a suspicion that she said. The narration "I can't trust people, I have to trust something, or I'll fall. Fall through those cracks and keep falling.", gave me a bad premonition, coupled with the quiet atmosphere before this family dinner The tension revealed in the picture, the picture is dark, and the eyes of the characters hide too much. This beginning implies a lot of things, and it also creates enough momentum for the upcoming plot.
Sure enough, not long after the banquet started, with the visit of the inspector (David Thewlis), the plot took a sharp turn, from joy to ice. The death of an ordinary female worker (played by Sophie Rundle) can involve so many people, and even dramatically corresponds to everyone in a family, which is unexpected and reasonable. In this society, everyone is not an individual. Everyone is connected with others all the time. There are good things shown by Keigo Higashino in "The Worry Store", and there are also bad things shown in this movie. The added bad eventually leads to death. In fact, the experience of this female worker is not special among the crowd. In fact, she is also to blame. The film does not criticize the evils of the capital economy, but, like "The Worry-free Grocery Store", exposes that which has been neglected by us. The connection between people, this connection is so secret, it has to be seen from the perspective of God. Why doesn't such a huge social network make people feel vast? After watching this movie, I was even afraid of my actions, just like the daughter of a movie capitalist, but she was in a bad mood for a while and asked someone to vent, and this act caused waves in the female worker's life enough to rebirth her Her hopes were extinguished—she could only live by selling herself since then. But the capitalist's daughter is not actually targeting her. Deep down, she is just dissatisfied with her mother's repression. It is her stupidity that makes her unaware of this, and it is also her naivety that makes her unable to control her actions. A butterfly can cause a storm on the other side of the ocean, of course, as well as human society. Never underestimate your own words and deeds, even if it is small, it is a wind.
Therefore, the drama and the movie cleverly set the detective as "GOD", connecting everyone at the beginning, and deciphering the truth. This method is reasonable and even ingenious, but it always makes me feel that something is wrong, it is too straightforward and smooth, And this inspector was expressionless, as deep as a valley, and seemed to know everything, which made me feel even more uncomfortable. It was not until the end that I suddenly realized the true identity of the detective, and I had to sigh at the wisdom and meticulousness of the British, and they were witty. After all, they did not portray the detective as a stern and formidable image. In the process of extracting the truth, the advantages of stage drama are fully demonstrated. The five people are surrounded by a small hall from beginning to end, and the emotions on each person's face are fully revealed. Whenever a connection is revealed, the facial expressions of the parties are worth a thousand words, and there is no need for narration or too much. The lines don't even need a scene to render, and the development of things is vaguely visible, but as an audience, they are afraid to see it. This can be seen from the faces of the parties.
As for repentance, I always believe that human nature is inherently evil, and the sharpness and wisdom of the British are revealed again at the end of the film. Humans are basically an animal that seeks benefits and avoids harm, no matter how brilliant civilization they have.

  • Arthur Birling: [about his workers] If you don't come down hard on some of these people, they'll soon be asking for the earth.

    Gerald Croft: [obsequiously] That's right.

The Inspector: They might. But it's better to ask for the earth than to take it.

Arthur Birling: [hanging up the phone] A girl has died. Suicide. A police inspector is on his way to ask us some questions.
