A work that teaches you to "respect"

I am not writing a film review to introduce the film, but to share the value of a work with you. Therefore, no running account-style plot introductions, and no hypocritical rendering of the atmosphere.

First of all, it is not surprising that this film can attract attention in Cannes. Looking at the list of exhibitors of several major European film festivals, it is not difficult to find that European film critics have a soft spot for two-tiered works, not to mention the attention paid to them. social problems. And the difficulty of filming this film is really not small. In order to improve the realism of the film, director Kennell used 225 genuine stray dogs instead of professional training dogs. The male protagonist Hagen has a lot of inner drama, and the emotional span is very large. In order to make this role well, the crew actually found two twin dogs with very different personalities, which is really painstaking.

Let's put aside the deep meaning of tiredness first and talk about the surface content of this film. I believe that many friends entered this movie with the mentality of watching a traditional pet movie, and these friends will be stunned. "White God" should be regarded as one of the few pet movies in the history of film that completely abandons the human value system. Most of the pet movies that people are accustomed to are filmed based on human’s value judgment on pets, such as the most typical expression of the cuteness of pets, the description of how pets help humans, and the depiction of pets’ loyalty to their owners, etc. In fact, this is all to please humans. That's it. For the first time, "White God" let us understand "dogs", the representative creatures of human pets, they have personalities, they have complex emotions, they have their own social relationships, they are independent and need to be respected. I have to admit that this unique perspective provides the viewer with a new perspective, and also guides you to reflect on more issues, especially when the conflict escalates to the climax, when Ma Lin and Hagen are lying flat on the ground and looking at each other. , this kind of strong moral reflection from the heart comes with a bang, which is still fresh in your memory, and also makes you have to rethink and face the meaning of the word "respect" and the current situation of the world.

Let’s talk about the hidden structure of the film brought about by “respect”, the world problems that most people think of: racial discrimination, Islamic state issues, etc., just like the dog fights in the film cultivate Hagen’s sense of killing for his own selfish interests. Go fight and use Hagen's kills for huge profits. There are many terrorist organizations in the world that make the white gods (the people who think that the white people are noble) shudder and hate them. In fact, when they were only the armed forces, it was these white gods who provided funds and human resources for training. Fighting, the purpose of fighting is to seek geopolitical interests for developed countries. And as long as the flower of evil is planted, no one can stop it from opening, just like Hagen who is the prince of vengeance. It's ridiculous, but that's the rules of the game created by the white god. The final ending of the film is the director Kennell's expectation of the world for human beings. Although it is somewhat romantic, it is indeed worthy of our reflection, and it is also the greatest value of the film. Although some groups exist at the bottom of the existing value structure, we should still learn to respect them and look at them.

Overall, this is a good, thought-provoking film. It is a little regrettable that in the second half of the film, the director was a little too hasty to express his implied value, which made the plot a little out of control.
