Speaking of ugly characters in literature, I think of Quasimodo the bell ringer in Notre Dame de Paris and the Phantom of the Opera. Although "The Phantom of the Opera" is a novel, it has become an indelible classic when it was adapted into a musical.
The author of "The Phantom of the Opera", Gaston Leroux, is a French journalist and detective novelist whose work style tends to be suspenseful and detective. The Phantom portrayed in the work is a poor man who has been rejected by his mother since he was a child because of his ugly appearance, and who was ruthlessly ridiculed by the people of the society. His infinite longing was also deeply hidden in his heart, only when he met the beautiful and kind Christine, all the longings and desires in his heart were released. Although the Phantom is ugly, he is gifted in many fields, especially music. He turned into a "music angel" to accompany Christine, taught her to sing, and helped her become famous. Christine's amazing musical talent was soon discovered, she became famous, and returned to her old love, Lava. All this annoyed the phantom behind the scenes, he was annoyed that Christine had someone he loved, he resented that Christine could not repay him with love, and even more resented that his ugly face had killed their love. In order to get revenge, it should be more accurate to say that the Phantom resented that Christine's love was based on his pain, so he began to act crazy again and again. He disguised himself as the god of death at a masquerade and stole Christine's engagement ring; he killed one person after another who saw his secrets; he even threatened Christine and him with Rava's life to grow old. And Christine uses a kiss to show him how powerful love can be, and that any soul is blessed by God. The phantom lost his way, fulfilled Christine's love, hid in his own world, and lived alone for life.
The characters in this work are wonderful. Christine is the embodiment of beauty, combining the beauty of appearance and soul. She symbolizes virtues such as kindness, tolerance, hard work, loyalty, and strength. She has many similarities with Esmeralda in "Notre Dame de Paris", but the biggest difference is that she is happy. her life was beautiful. And she is also a symbol of beauty. She awakened the sleeping conscience of the Phantom with full of love and influenced the Phantom.
Lava is a neutral character. At first I thought that for the sake of the plot, he might be set up as a selfish ghost, a playboy who indulges in beauty, a scum who saves himself in times of crisis, but he is not like that. His love for Christine is sincere, and he is inseparable to protect Christine's safety; he hopes that the whole world will witness their happiness; he is willing to sacrifice himself for Christine's happiness without hesitation... From love From a personal point of view, he is affectionate and loyal, he never turns back for love, and he bravely accompanies his lover regardless of differences in family and status. But from the perspective of Phantom, he is full of the publicity of society, and lacks the most precious kindness of Christine. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that he is not so kind. He hardly considered the problem from the Phantom's point of view, and did not sympathize with the Phantom's experience. He even set up a plan to capture the Phantom in order to protect his love. It has to be said that he was not scheming. As a pampered aristocratic son, he naturally had no chance to understand Phantom's deformed life, and he reflected the indifference of society and the sense of alienation between people to a large extent.
Phantom is a character portrayed by the author with his heart. He is also similar to Quasimodo to a certain extent. Phantom has a very ugly and almost twisted appearance, but has amazing talent. The author gave him a special character setting, and he was destined to have a special life. It is the sadness of the times that a person who has amazing talents in architecture, design, composition, singing, etc. lives in the dark like a ghost because of an ugly face. Ugly is not a sin, nor should it be the cause of being trampled on by the world. This aspect reflects the era's deformed understanding of ugliness, arbitrarily judging a person because of the beauty and ugliness of the face and even ruining a person's life. And the Phantom grows paranoid and crazy in such a crack. Year after year, he is extremely lonely, he desperately longs for the company and hug of his lover, and suffers from hell but longs for heaven. And his radical thinking is also doomed to his step-by-step risk in the future. The desire and loneliness in my heart are infinitely magnified, so the Phantom is so easily moved, and because of his unforgettable love for Christine, he can forgive all the hurts she has caused because of her one kiss and infinite fraternity. and gave everything for her. From the beginning to the end, he is a child who longs to be loved and wants to stay away from loneliness. He is easily moved, and a little benefit is enough to make him give everything. Phantom is such a heart-wrenching character. For Christine's happiness, he quit in embarrassment and was alone for the rest of his life.
A detailed analysis of Christine's role reveals that she has experienced a watershed in her identity. She used to be a violinist's jewel, and a childhood sweetheart with the aristocratic young Lava. However, the death of her father reduced her to a singer who relied on the opera house for a living, and she fell from the world of a princess to an ordinary girl. And in her most painful and helpless days, she was always accompanied by the so-called music angel - Phantom. At that time, the Phantom was really an angel, his feelings were pure and sincere, and he imparted music to Christine selflessly. They are also teachers and friends. I think for a long time, Phantom and Christine are lonely souls who rely on each other to keep warm. Perhaps Phantom has already conquered Christine's soul with music. But the story is unavoidable, and Christine eventually returned to his handsome and noble childhood sweetheart.
In fairy tales, the princess and the prince are always together, and the love between Beauty and the Beast is also based on the beast turning back into the prince. The Phantom was not destined to be a prince from birth, and perhaps it was destined that their story would not end with a beautiful love. This probably comes from the society's definition of beauty and ugliness. Beauty is destined to gain everything, while ugliness is destined to pass by many things. But ugliness is not a sin, nor is it the origin of sin. Even if you are born ugly, you still have the right to pursue beauty, the right to pursue all happiness, and the right to be respected and valued. Even if you are not beautiful, you still have to have the courage to live beautifully; even if you are not beautiful, don't take the ugliness of your appearance as a sin, please live hard and work hard to shine another light of your life!
