On how the rich and handsome lose to the poor and the poor

I found this movie last week when I was bored looking for a movie to watch. In fact, I skipped it several times before, because the name is "brooklyn", and the cover is a girl facing the sea in spring, which is simply a capital "boring".
I clicked in and watched the trailer. I was used to the fast-paced heartbeat of the Hunger Games ghost movies, and suddenly felt that this slow romance should also be worth watching.
Today finally officially entered the theater to see. There were quite a few people in the theater who watched this film alone like me, and I was surprised to find that most of them were male. As I am not used to American movies without subtitles, I must admit that I have watched it here so many times, except for Chinese movies and the last time I watched "The 33" by myself, I was honored to watch every movie ten minutes after the beginning. Falling asleep successfully... well, that's not really something to be proud of, although I admit that I felt very bored and incomprehensible in class.
For the above reasons, I told myself that this film must be watched and listened carefully. Due to hearing reasons, it is true that some parts are not heard very clearly, but it is still no problem to understand generally. After watching it until I got home to take a shower, I had a lot of questions about this film in my mind. The moment I unscrewed the hot water, I suddenly felt that I had a little understanding of what this video was talking about.

Before I figured it out, I actually thought that the heroine Eilis should choose to stay in Ireland and live happily with her mother and Gao Fushuai jim. She really doesn't seem to have any reason to travel back to the United States and return to Tony's side. Tony is not tall, so he is just a little handsome. He has an ordinary job and an ordinary family. At first glance, he can't compare with Gao Fushuai Jim.
Turning on the hot water for a moment, I figured this out.
No reason, because she is eilis. Before she was funded by her sister to go to Brooklyn, New York, she was just an ordinary girl in Ireland. Her father passed away, and she lived with her mother and sister. She was working an ordinary job and did not dare to be unreasonable to flattery. The proprietress showed a hint of sullenness, and she would discuss with her best friend jim, the most popular boy in the area, and she didn't know how to wear clothes. She's one of the most inconspicuous girls standing in the corner at a dance.
When she first set foot on American soil, she suffered from a disease called "homesick", as if she couldn't get used to anything, and she would cry uncontrollably when she received letters from home. When I watched a paragraph, I was actually very emotional, and I also touched the scene in many details. This was also the case when I first came to the United States. Although it is not as exaggerated as her, after all, she has a background in the times. Although I am not good at history, I can't tell why, but the current American society is more than the time of the heroine in the film. Open up a lot. Even so, I can still understand Eilis' feeling of isolation and helplessness. At that time, Eilis would have often felt left behind and forgotten by the world.
Tony is the guy who found this kind girl in the corner of the dance. He smiled and walked slowly to Eilis, who was put on the dove by his partner, and asked if he could ask her to dance. In the days that followed, he waited for her to finish the evening class, accompanies her to dinner, listened to her chatting, took her home for a warm dinner, and danced for her on the street at midnight.
When watching the film, I think this is the daily life of an ordinary young couple. There is not the kind of talented girl in Korean dramas, eilis and tony are just ordinary people, girls don't have beautiful appearance, boys don't have tall and stylish figure and prominent family background, this sweet girl likes to laugh, sometimes she lacks self-confidence , and this boy from Italy wears loose and casual clothes, works hard without a high degree, and even has a non-standard English pronunciation. However, it was such an ordinary boy who gave eilis the happiest time, and the pain of "homesick" was left behind. Because of Tony's presence, eilis felt for the first time that she had a home in Brooklyn.

However, the news of her sister's sudden death brought eilis and tony back to reality. elis must go home. In that era when there were only ships for transportation and daily communication depended on writing letters, going back might mean seeing you again at an unknown time. The young couple decided to secretly get engaged. "Mary me before you leave."
Eilis, who returned to Ireland again, found that she was no longer the ordinary girl who had a little low self-esteem when she left. She was wearing stylish clothes brought from New York, stylish sunglasses, and even the latest swimsuit. Eilis, who reappeared in such an excellent manner, attracted jim, the man she once discussed with her best friend who could never be approached.
In this way, eilis should also like jim, such a handsome boy with a good family background and a good family education, anyone should be moved, and eilis is no exception.

My only tear in this movie is buried here.
Tony came to his 8-year-old brother and asked him to help him write letters to eilis, because he sent eilis five letters before, but eilis only replied one, he was worried that he did not express well. Before this, the camera has been describing the happy time of eilis and jim. I was used to seeing the dance party, the villa, and the appearance of jim in a straight suit. Suddenly, I saw Tony and his gray overalls again, and suddenly I felt a little sad. Sure enough, when comparing, the difference will be more obvious.
The camera goes back to eilis, she closes the drawer full of letters from tony, lies on the bed and starts to write to tony: I want you to know that... She shreds the letter: what the hell do I want him to know? What did he do wrong? He was clearly wrong.
Yes, obviously he did nothing wrong, didn't he?

What I don't quite understand is why eilis would suddenly change his mind in the face of the former boss's coercion. Maybe it was the sudden excitement that made all her memories come back. She finally chose to return to the United States, back to Tony's side.
I didn't understand at first why she made this decision. If she is worse, she can completely deny the engagement with Tony. Anyway, it is only a private decision of the two. No matter how you look at it, the jim in front of you is better.
But, she is eilis. Even if she becomes the winner in life who is gilded and reborn, in her bones, she is still the gentle Irish girl. If she hadn't met tony, maybe she would have been depressed and lived in homesick all the time. Maybe Tony can't compare to anything, but the happiness he once brought to Eilis, everything that the two have experienced together, is never comparable to jim.
Like is to want to have everything, and love should be willing to give up everything.

In this film, you can see the growth of a girl, but some essential things cannot be erased by growth.
I can't say if this was the right decision, but for eilis, the answer is yes. Maybe tony can't bring eilis a rich and satisfying life, but he is the one who pulls eilis from the corner into the sun, he is the one who insists on waiting for eilis to finish the evening class every night, and he is the one who is willing to listen to eilis talking a lot of nonsense He was the one who made eilis laugh by dancing under the lights.
For eilis, the right person was him. No matter who comes and goes, it is still him in the end.
Even if it's not a happy ending in the eyes of others, but for eilis, it's enough.

Brooklyn quotes

  • Mrs. Keogh: I'll tell you this much: I am going to ask Father Flood to preach a sermon on the dangers of giddiness. I now see that giddiness is the eighth deadly sin. A giddy girl is every bit as evil as a slothful man, and the noise she makes is a lot worse. Now, enough.

  • Frankie Fiorello: So, first of all, I should say that we don't like Irish people.

[General cries of outrage around the table]

Frankie Fiorello: We don't! That is a well known fact! A big gang of Irish beat Maurizio up and he had to have stitches. And because the cops round here are Irish, nobody did anything about it.

Maurizio: There are probably two sides to it. I might have said something I shouldn't, I can't remember now. Anyway, they probably weren't all Irish.

Frankie Fiorello: They just had red hair and big legs.
