Theresa was a divorced mother, and she had been living alone for a long time. I think maybe she wanted to find an ideal partner, while she was afraid of being hurt again. So when Theresa read the message in the battle which she found on the beach, I was aware of her strong emotions in her peaceful voice. She was deeply moved by the letter, also she had a strong admiration for the man who wrote this letter to deceased wife. I think when she saw these sentences: ”You were my true north. I could always steer for home when you were my home.” she must want to be the true north of someone. Theresa decided to find out the writer, for her work and may be she could find her happiness. Theresa loved Garret for his deep love for his died wife, but because of the same reason, Garret couldn't forget Catherine and he couldn't love Theresa totally.At the end of the movie, Garret went to sea by the boat which named after Catherine, to say goodbye to Catherine, to start a new life with Theresa, while he drowned in the sea to save a couple and their kid.
The movie occurs to me the love story between Echo (San Mao) and Jose (He xi). They also had pure and beautiful love, and I remember that Echo had Jose had said “When we are both to aged to walk even with help of each other, we will wear neat and tidy clothe, overlie a bed together, and close our eye and say, 'well! Go together! '”. However, In 1979 Jose drowned while diving, letting Echo live alone. After Jose's death , Echo lived just for parents and friends, and in 1991, she gave up her life. I love the woman and her stories, every time when I think of Echo, I feel so sorry for the ending and I always wonder if there is wonderful and happy-end love.
The movie isan imaginary story, and maybe you would think this kind of sadness only appear in the movie, but, in fact, it really exists in our daily life, just like Echo and Jose. Maybe we would meet a person in the future, and maybe we would fall in love with somebody, a beautiful and pure love is rare, hard to come by, just like what Catherine meant to Garret, Garret meant to Theresa, and Jose meant to Echo.
It's a great pity that the beautiful love ended with death, but I believe there are more love ended with happiness, as we all know, not every story has a happy ending. Maybe it also is a kind of beauty in the tragedy.
