One of the best there!

This one is the most ingenious film I have watched recently! Can't love this more! Even want to add it to my favorite list!
Woody Allen is simply amazing. His consistent opening and end title, and witty dialogues! I can't believe that pure conversations can hold up a film, while in this film he proved how ingeniously and elegantly he can get that done! The dialogues of Sophie asking Stanley what he thinks of her, of Sophie asking if he ever thought of her as a female , of Stanley finally realizing Sophie and Howard's dupes, of Stanley talking with Aunt Vanessa of choosing either Olivia or Sophie, of Stanley's final proposal. Though those lines are so ingenious and witty! I laughed at them wholeheartedly! I can simply watch those conversations over and over again!
Throughout the experience of viewing, I always thought I may have watched some similar films before, but I failed to recall any. Is this a more lighthearted version ofwhich also has Colin Firth as cynical Mr. Darcy? Or doesn't Stanley resemble rational, scientific, arrogant, caustic yet cute Sheldon to some extent? And those country scenes, don't they look like those of English comedies or dramas, likeand other films that Colin has been in? All those things look quite trivial or commonplace separately, but bringing all them together is simply genius!

Plus, Colin Firth and Emma Stone are both so adorable. Woody Allen is magical, like the optimistic American version of Wang Kai-Wei, who is able to dig out some facets of their personalities that match with roles, so actors put in least effort to act, but just be their own. (btw, they both did the same thing of picking names of their characters from assistant directors.'s Gil, for example) Colin, as a Virgo, definitely share some characteristics with Stanley, and Emma, with her shiny large eyes, looks like a whimsical elf. The Stanley character also reflects something in Woody Allen himself. How can he repetitively finds so many actors that brings out a part of himself?! Maybe partly thanks to the script written by himself?

BTW, I envy the Sophie character so much even though this is just a fake story. She is so lovely that Stanley, or Colin, easily fall in love with her! While in real life, mutual affection is always so hard, for someone not good-looking as me. I also think the plot of how Stanley came to realize that he also likes Sophie a little tricky. At that party, on which Sophie looks stunning, Stanley says he has no other feelings than awe and admiration, yet after Sophie expressed her disappointment, and possibly some romantic feelings, Stanley became uneasy, and came to respond to her feelings even after he found he was duped by her. It may just be some plot, but Sophie was doing that so subtly and cleverly, that Stanley, in the end, thinks he was the person who falls in love first! The following are some key points:
1, you have to be agreeable in the first place;
2. share some intimate moments with the guy, depends on your luck
3. give him some hints about your potential feelings, yet never really tell him that you love him;
4. have other suitors so he feels competition, and men are usually competitive;
5. when he proposes to you, give him some hard time, so he will cherish you more.
However, all those tips are based on the presumption that you have suitors, and he has some feelings at the first place. Those points are rather catalysts.

It is also interesting that Woody Allen chose this pair of actors of age difference. Is it suggesting something about his own mating? Anyway, Colin is just so adorable that any women would be lucky to have him!

Magic in the Moonlight quotes

  • Stanley: The comparison makes me laugh! Olivia is a person of accomplishment and charm. Sophie's a street finagler who makes her way living off one bit of hokum to the next.

    Aunt Vanessa: Well, I don't see how you can compare the two.

    Stanley: Well, don't put ideas into my head!

    Aunt Vanessa: Well, far be it from me!

    Stanley: Of course, she does come from dire circumstances. I mean, it's very easy to be judgmental about people who are born into circumstances less fortunate than one's own.

    Aunt Vanessa: Well, life is harsh. One must do what one must to survive.

    Stanley: Well put. And people do sometimes make the wrong choices, which they regret, even though no serious harm was done.

    Aunt Vanessa: Which of us has not made some blunders in life?

    Stanley: And there is a rather appealing quality about Sophie. Despite her disgusting behaviour.

    Aunt Vanessa: Yes, her smile is rather winning. Of course, it depends how much value you put on the purely physical.

    Stanley: Well, no, I... I, for one, esteem the higher virtues.

    Aunt Vanessa: Hmm... Beauty of the soul...

    Stanley: Although her eyes are rather pleasant to look into. And that she can be amusing, under the right circumstances.

    Aunt Vanessa: Oh, but Olivia is an educated, cultivated woman. One that befits a man of your artistic genius.

    Stanley: Yes, now, my genius must be factored in. On paper, there's really no reason to prefer Sophie to Olivia.

    Aunt Vanessa: Well, I would say the opposite.

    Stanley: ...And so your, your suggestion that I, I be honest with Olivia and tell her that as irrational as it seems, I've fallen in love with, with Sophie - that's a preposterous notion.

    Aunt Vanessa: It's lunacy.

    Stanley: ...Yet I can't help feeling that...

    Aunt Vanessa: ...That you love Sophie. Yes, I understand. You're puzzled and bewildered; because your foolish logic tells you that you should love Olivia.

    Stanley: Foolish logic?

    Aunt Vanessa: And yet, how little that logic means when placed next to Sophie's smile...

    Stanley: What are you saying?

    Aunt Vanessa: ...That the world may or may not be without purpose, but it's not totally without some kind of magic.

    Stanley: ...I have irrational positive feelings for Sophie Baker. It's like witnessing a trick I can't figure out.
