As if it used to be, people are no longer

"Begin Again" (2013), which was squeezed into the cracks of domestic blockbusters in the summer, quietly faded out of sight with a box office score of 20 million. It was too late for this film to enter the theaters in mainland China. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013. A year later, it was released around the world one year later. It was released on the Hong Kong screen in September 2014. Also nearly a year earlier than it is now. In such a full schedule, most of the interested viewers have downloaded and watched it through the Internet, and those who don't know it probably don't want to know what it is about.
Because "Meet You in New York" is by no means a film that sees the title and has a desire to find out, if it can't achieve the poetic sense of "tell them, I went on a white crane", "some people praise wisdom, others don't" Zhang Yang, the title should not be as long as possible. The translation of "Meet You in New York Again" is self-defeating and has a sense of "Zhang Zhen's storytelling ghosts and minds". Maybe "Go Again" is too thin, maybe "New York" can give you some imagination, but it is not a series, and it is a bit inexplicable that I am not ready to go again in London to meet you or Paris to meet you. Can't blame the translation, it also has Begin Again, New York Melody, Can a Song Save Your Life overseas? Several titles, originally commonly known as "songs change lives" when downloaded online, are also quite a combination of local and foreign and nondescript.
All in all, a few years from now, this movie will probably be listed in the "good movies missed because of bad titles" anecdotal list. This is an injustice to director John Carney. His other work is "Once" (2006), which has repeatedly appeared on the "must-see XX movie for literary and artistic youth", which is vividly transliterated as "Like" Benchmark of literature, music and film.

"Meet You in New York" and "Once Again" have many similarities. They also tell about music, come from the streets, have similar stories, and have similar feelings and values. Even the men and women on the poster who are looking at each other seem to be the same. In recent years, John Carney has directed several little-known small films in Ireland, and he probably found that the music theme is the most handy. "Meet You in New York Again" does have some bright spots in music, and it can't help but benefit from the creator's experience as a musician.
It tells a story: Greta is a girl wandering with her boyfriend in New York, and occasionally writes and composes songs with her hobbies; Dan is a famous music producer, lamenting that there is no good music in impetuous times. The two met in a small bar when their emotional and professional lives were at their lowest point, and they were pleasantly surprised when they heard Greta sing Dan. They got to know each other well, made friends, and decided to create an album together.
The similar inheritance and time span of the film and "Once", as well as the realistic approach of the work itself, are easily reminiscent of Linklater's "Love Is" trilogy. In this regard, fans also have a deja vu that "all encounters in the world are reunions after a long absence". However, because of the replacement of the cast, Director Carney is more like transplanting the scene to New York and telling the story all over again, compared to Linklater's practice of continuing the story.

Each city has its own unique memories, flavors and themes, and the vibes of Dublin and New York are clearly worlds apart. The ambiguous, simple and even rough tone in "Once" becomes brighter in "Meet You in New York Again". As the picture is polished and smooth, there is also the singing. The indiscriminate tone sung by Greta, played by Keira Knightley, is like any independent female voice. people's hearts. Similarly, the two flashbacks precisely corresponding to the film's construction stage, and the special effects of musical instrument ensemble imagined by the protagonist are also full of ingenuity. Of course, this neatness corresponds to commercial value, and it cannot be said to be a step backward.
Although "Meet You in New York, Departure Again" retains the tenderness of "feeling in love, only in etiquette", it is more like a new approach to success in the metropolis. Simply put, it is another American dream. The relationship between the protagonists is less like a soul mate and more like a business partner. There are a lot of concerns about album production and sales, and the mentality of recording "original" sounds in different neighborhoods is almost a coincidence, which seems to go beyond the pure music itself.
The film starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo were nominated for actors at the 87th Academy Awards, but neither was the role of the film, but from "The Imitation Game" (The Imitation Game, 2014) and Foxcatcher (Foxcatcher, 2014). The performance of the two in "Meet You in New York Again" is relatively fresh and natural, which can make the audience ignore their star status and past roles. The work itself has only been nominated for best original song, which is the award "Once" won in 2008.

Although it is not as good as "Once" in many aspects, "Meet You in New York" is still an excellent work independently, and there are many moving places. For example, unhappy musicians get together and join the band for no reward. The close friendship between them is extraordinarily free and easy when they run off the subway station and the rooftop. Many scenes in the film were shot improvisationally, and the shaking shots participated in this group of people, as if sharing their joys and sorrows with them and could raise a glass to celebrate. In the skyscrapers of New York, sharing each other's playlists, this kind of gathering and candor is also sincere enough.
Magic Red's lead singer Adam Levy plays Greta's boyfriend Dave, and the last "cover" of "Lost Star" brings the film to a climax. Greta stood in the corner, weeping silently, and did not take the stage. "Love is patient and kind." This is the essence of John Carney's films. He is good at details, no matter the unspoken tacit understanding in "Once" or the sympathy in this film. In an instant, it was more touching than the record selling for $10,000.

    Dan: She says that affectionately.

  • Miriam Hart: No girls like her, she is distant, and basically the only people that want to hang out with her are older boys who want to fuck her.
