to Sophie

You've said before that you want to slip through the cracks, but you don't when you're in trouble. Your brain tries to do it, but your body doesn't. Your body stays put. You let others do what they want to you.

Because you convince yourself that you're not there, that these things didn't happen to you, and they didn't hurt you.

I know you're going to be training like crazy this week, not because you want an Olympic gold medal, but because you want to feel in control after the clinic.

But, I want you to know, Sophie, that when you step on the balance beam, you're detached, and that's the only place you feel safe. But I want you to know that you don't have to walk on the balance beam, there are other places where you feel safe, like here, like this room is one of them.
